The former U.S. congressional representative and current senior adviser to the president and secretary of state for arms control, nonproliferation, and disarmament discusses the prospects for U.S. and international security in the midst of continued global unrest. Under Secretary Tauscher represented California’s 10th Congressional District for 13 years in the U.S. House of Representatives. The district includes San Francisco’s suburbs in Contra Costa, Alameda Solano, and Sacramento counties. She was the only member of Congress to have two national defense laboratories, Lawrence Livermore and Sandia California, in her district.

Although the U.S. would still be the dominant world power if everybody got rid of nuclear weapons, its ruling class still wants to keep and improve its own nuclear weapons stockpile while doing its best to ensure that countries like Iran that could use their possession of nuclear weapons as a deterrent to U.S. conventional or nuclear attack don't get such weapons.
