Liberated Ads Salute America Following the Death of Osama bin Laden

by California Department of Corrections
The California Department of Corrections (CDC) has unveiled a new campaign of bus shelter ads to celebrate America’s assassination of Osama bin Laden.

Released prior to July 4th, a total of ten ads in MUNI bus shelters throughout San Francisco were apprehended, rehabilitated and discharged without incident. The ten liberated ads represent each year in the long decade spanning the declaration of the War on Terror by President Bush and the eventual demise of al-Qaeda’s elusive leader.

The liberated ads can been seen on the CDC website at http://www.CorrectionsDepartment.org

Joining in celebration with millions of US civilians after the demise of bin Laden, the red, white and blue advertisements not only pay patriotic tribute to our country, but also celebrate the unsung history of American assassinations.

The ads feature a 1950s-era, female soldier saluting beneath the Stars and Stripes with bold letters declaring: AMERICA STANDING PROUD. A text sidebar highlights a lengthy, but very partial, list of ASSASSINATIONS BY THE USA SINCE 1945. The list includes heads of state, military commanders and religious leaders such as:

1953 - Mohammad Mossadegh, Prime Minister, Iran
1959, 1963 - (attempted) Norodom Sihanouk, Leader of Cambodia
1961 - Patrice Lumumba, President, the Congo
1963 - Ngo Dinh Diem, President, South Vietnam
1960s - (attempted) Fidel Castro, President, Cuba
1967 - Che Guevara, Cuban military leader
1970 - Rene Schneider, Army Commander, Chile
1973 - Salvador Allende, President, Chile
1981 - Omar Torrijos, Leader of Panama
1983 - Ahmed Dlimi, Army General, Morocco
1983 - (attempted) Miguel d'Escoto, Foreign Minister, Nicaragua
1985 - Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, Religious leader, Lebanon
2002 - (attempted) Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Military leader, Afghanistan
2011 - Osama bin Laden

The rehabilitated advertisements are currently at liberty and seem to have successfully readjusted to public life. However, these ads will remain under surveillance by department staff to prevent recidivism and any potential lapse into prior criminal behavior.

In-person visiting times with the advertisements are available to the public 24 hours a day at locations throughout San Francisco, including the intersection of Geary Boulevard and Laguna Street, a site documented in photography by CDC personnel.

Founded in 1994, the CDC is a private correctional facility that protects the public through the secure management, discipline, and rehabilitation of California's advertising. The department was initiated by individuals who felt that public correctional facilities were insufficiently managing the state's most criminal elements and that effective care and treatment would improve under the supervision of a private institution.
