A press conference held at the Frutivale BART station in Oakland on June 1st announced the call to action.

The Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant has called for two protests in Oakland the day Mehserle is released. The first is at Fruitvale BART at 3:00 pm and then at Broadway & 14th Street at 5:30 pm. Mehserle was sentenced to only two years and was given credit for time served prior to the conviction and since.

by Sunday or Monday
We should protest on Sunday and Monday. People should be out in the streets more than one day, it is that important. We need to shut this shit down!
by Be accurate
Today's Sf Chron quotes ''Uncle Bobby'' Cephus Johnson as saying that Mehserle will be released Monday June 13.
Unless Indybay has some info that contradicts that statement please correct your headline .
Thanks . We need to be as accurate and truthful in all our statements as the defenders of Mehserle are dishonest .
by this is accurate
the protest is on Sunday at this time
by One day is not enough
There's no more coming out after this. Mehserle is a free man and the best we can do is come out for a day just to hold signs and listen to a speech? Fuck that. Where is the outrage? There shouldn't be business as usual in Oakland when killer cops are sent free. Peaceful protest sends the wrong message. Civil protest response to a broken justice systems sends the message that cops can do what ever they want with out consequence. There needs be consequences.

Who would benefit today or tommorrow from a violent confrontation ? NOT the movement for Justice for Oscar Grant !
First off Militarity speaking the Cops are far toughter, armed with clubs, tasers, tea gas, rubber bullets , and guns . Many of them would love a pretense to attack our march . There's no way that a few hundred radicals (if even that ) could win such a clash .
Politically the powers that be would relish the opportunity to change the subject from the legal slap on the wrist that Herr Mehserle has received to ''violence on the streets''. Don't play into their hands !
I am not a pacifist . i strongly believe in the right of self defence both o indiviually and collectivly .
But a Non defensive action today (no matter what one feels the moral or political justification may be ) would really hurt our movement against the almost daily police violence .
by Resistance is alive
Your premise that our movement is some how going to be ruined by other peoples actions is way off -base. There has been plenty of violence in the past and that doesn't stop me and countless others from attending Oscar Grant rallies. People have a right to be angry and express their rage how every they want. Such an unfair/broken justice system demands a little more action than the usual civil discourse/polite protest.

People get killed everyday by police and people do nothing about it most of the time because they don't see it and what we don't know can't hurt us. But this time, THEY FUCKED UP and it can't be denied, not when its on film for the whole world to see. WE HAVE TO TAKE ACTION!

Rioting in Oakland shouldn't be anything shocking to you anyway. Jeezz, you think you've seen bad. You haven't seen the worst yet. Just be happy that you live in the Bay Area because if this were Athens, Greece, the violence send shock waves through out the nation and probably give you a heart attack.
by Resident of the Real world
As i may clear I'm not a pacifist . Let me elaborate i have actively particpated in defending myself and others . I have seen intense violence and so far no ''heart attack ''.
Unlike the last poster however i don't glorify violence . If you think breaking a few store and/or Branch bank windows is going to prevent future acts of Police Murder you're ignorance is breath taking.
Once again every action , whether it be a Legal rally and march, sit-in , seizing a building whatever should be evalualted as to it's effect on our movement . And Yes it's important that we are able to keep the narrative at where it belongs , that a murderous police thug is going to do less time than many drunk drivers !
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
