SOLIDARITY STAND for Oakland Public Libraries, including the wonderful African American Museum and Library TONITE, Thursday, May 26th 5:00pm at Oakland City Hall, Budget & City Council Meeting, 1 Frank Ogawa Plaza between 14th & 15th St - one block from 12th St BART!
Six years ago we fought - and won - the closing of public libraries in Salinas by doing a 24 hour Read-In at the Cesar Chavez Library.
Now, the mayor of Oakland is proposing to save the city money by closing most of the Oakland libraries.
We MUST stand tonite at the Budget and City Council meetings to DEMAND NO CUTS, TAX the RICH and NO MORE $$$ for WARS!
The city of Oakland has contributed over 1.5 BILLION dollars for wars; if the richest 400 people in California were taxed at a more fair rate of 26% (less than most of us are taxed), the state would have $12 BILLION dollars a year! The Oakland libraries need a mere $10 million!
The financial cost to support the libraries are a mere 2% of the entire Oakland general fund; yet the proposed cuts represent 52% of all city job losses.
Even during the 'great' depression, libraries did NOT close! We MUST - and can - keep our libraries open!
Gather on the steps of City Hall by 5:00pm! Look for the HOT PINK!
p.s. if anyone can contribute $$$ for flyers, materials, and/or black latex paint, PLEASE do!!!! 510-540-7007
