CWA Stays Strong In Solidarity

In another setback for KGTV's Union Decertification Campaign Plan, employees overwhelmingly told the National Labor Relations Board today that they want to keep their Union of nearly 60 years.

Hundreds of union families and supporters have started gathering outside KGTV's 47th Street studios for an impromptu solidarity rally.

On the surface, it must have seemed like a good idea: Hire a union-busting law firm; Refuse to negotiate a fair contract; Use all legal means possible to delay; Intimidate employees; Discipline Executive Board members; Refuse to settle grievances; Create chaos and blame it on the Union; Refuse all settlement meetings; Frustrate the employees and then suggest they get rid of their Union. What could go wrong?

Local 54 President Dennis Csillag said the Company miscalculated both the strength and will of the employees and the support they would receive. "The Company had 2 union-busting firms working on this full-time. Both firms trained managers to deceive workers and pit them against one another. McGraw-Hill corporate was involved. They wasted millions upon millions of dollars on this campaign."

Even KGTV's Union Decertification Campaign Plan documents revealed that employees were not likely to vote out their Union and managers quietly admitted weeks ago that they knew the numbers were not there.

The vote was on hold for 3 years after KGTV refused to settle a pair of Unfair Labor Practice charges, choosing to litigate them to force more delay. Last September, the NLRB found the station guilty of "unlawful conduct" in both cases. KGTV complied with the Board's Decision & Order in late January, allowing the NLRB to schedule today's vote.

Employees and the San Diego County labor community plan to hold KGTV General Manager Jeff Block to his word: "It would be fruitless to negotiate a contract right now, but after the vote we can move on, regardless of the outcome."
