Dear Resisters of War,
Meet the two War Resisters League staff members who will be visiting from the WRL office in New York. Kimber Heinz and Ali Issa will be on the west coast to meet with local WRL chapters as well as build with west coast based Arab American, Indigenous and GI resistance groups and allies. They would like to meet with you too. Please stop by on February 28th!
Unfortunately, the War Resisters League is not yet out of business. There are still many illegal and immoral wars going on—the ones that make the news, like Afghanistan and Iraq, the ones that exist in many other places and don’t get a lot of attention in the news, and the ones like those in Pakistan and Yemen that have been secret until just recently. WRL is still committed to ending all wars and ending the root causes of wars.
Once upon a time, WRL-West had an office and paid staff members. Today, WRL-West has plenty to do but few people to do it. WRL-West is right where you are, if you want it to be. You are the people power that is needed to re-energize War Resisters League-West. There is more than just a WRL-West email list-serve.
There are many things that could be done to build a WRL presence in the San Francisco Bay Area. My fantasy recruitment ad is something like: “Ageing radical pacifist seeks others for possible long term relationships, to participate in local chapter of War Resisters League and possible affinity group. Must have desire to end war and the causes of war and willingness to plug-in in whatever ways are best suitable. Want to meet people willing to carry broken rifle banners and/or person literature tables at rallies, marches, and other events, discuss revolutionary nonviolence, and work toward nonviolent revolution. People of all ages, races, and genders are wanted and needed.”
The broken rifle banner does appear here and there. WRL-West occasionally co-sponsors or endorses events. But there isn’t the WRL-West presence that there should be. We need you to participate to make that presence bloom and grow.
Please contact me, if you are inclined to meet with others, strategize, brainstorm and act to make WRL much more present in the bay area, and to guide it and make it your own.
