Banner Hung Across 101 to Protest CalTrans Project
Activists continue to protest the widening of Hwy. 101 through Richardson Grove State Park.
On Monday, Feb. 21,people were gathering for a rally in Garberville at noon, when word came of an action starting at Richardson Grove. So everyone got in their cars and moved the rally to Highway 101, where two climbers were sitting in a tree with a large banner stretched across the highway. The banner said " NO ROAD WIDENING. CALTRANS LIES RUINS OUR LIVES." The banner was in an area where activists have found many white markings on the Anderson property that adjoins the park. Some old growth trees are marked. At least sixty Richardson Grove supporters stood next to the 101, holding signs and waving to passing vehicles. Reports came in that there were about 20 California Highway Patrol vehicles sitting just south of the grove, with two officers in each vehicle. The climbers came down at 5 pm, leaving the banner.
