Anti-Pacifica Propaganda on 1/21/11 KPFA Evening News

by Stop Thug Hallinan Gang
At 6:43 p.m. for about 3 minutes on 1/21/11 on the KPFA evening news, 94.1 FM, the 300,000 or so people who listen to KPFA on the radio were subjected to a proud announcement by "Concerned Listener" Thug Hallinan Gang Local Station Board Member Pamela Drake that she has $60,000 in pledges if Pacifica will reinstate Republican Party plant Brian Edwards-Tiekert and his fellow paid money drain, Aimee Allison, thus effectively blackmailing KPFA and most definitely violating the bylaws in regard to being a worthy representative of Pacifica on the Local Station Board.
It costs more than $60,000 to pay for The Morning Show. We can be sure The Republican Party plant Tiekert and his friend, Allison, each received at least $50,000 plus benefits annually, not much compared to commercial radio, but a lot for listener sponsored, non-profit, community radio like KPFA.

This dual loyalty of certain Local Station Board members is the subject of a lawsuit brought by the wonderful listener-subscriber, Daniel Borgstrom against the Thug Hallinan Gang members who are also Local Station Board members who signed the infamous Exhibit 1 in the lawsuit Borgstrom v Margy Wilkinson, Conn Hallinan, Daniel Siegel and Malcolm Bernstein in Alameda Superior Court (does anyone have the action number, please), more fully described by the attorney who filed it, Richard Phelps at
http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/01/14/18669196.php
and
http://www.indybay.org/uploads/2011/01/14/loyalty_suit_pdf.pdf
The Complaint is formally entitled Shareholders Derivative Complaint for Compensatory and Punitive Damages for Breach of Duty of Undivided Loyalty and Intentional Interference with Prospective Economic Advantage.

Exhibit 1 is the flyer used to raise the pledge money for this club against Pacifica.

This evening's broadcast seems to be enough evidence to add Pamela Drake as a Doe 1 Defendant. It can be heard at:
http://www.kpfa.org/archive/id/66997

The background of the defendants is more fully described at
http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/01/14/18669196.php?show_comments=1#18669332
It should be noted that the Hallinans are a millionaire family, formerly connected to socialist causes. I am sure the parents of Conn and Matthew Hallinan, Vince and Vivian Hallinan, would be horrified at the promotion by these 2 sons of the Republican Party plant Brian Edwards-Tiekert and the whole Larry Bensky-CIA agenda that the Hallinans are clearly supporting.

Wisely, Arlene Englehardt is not going on the air to be attacked by Thug Hallinan Gang Local Station Board member Pamela Drake. Her attorney most likely told her that this matter is in litigation and the proper forum for all comments is the arbitration and any possible NLRB hearings. It is the Thug Hallinan Gang's promotion of the arbitration that is costing Pacifica money as only 2 people did not accept the layoffs; the other people who were paid to produce The Morning Show accepted the layoffs.

It is shameful and disgusting propaganda for a money-draining gang to have this harangue on the Evening News and it is not news; it is garbage, at best. The money that was raised in December is now paying the bills and providing much needed capital improvements to KPFA's building and to the outdated phone system. The new manager at KPFA, Amit Pendayl, was on the new Morning Mix describing all of this, and can be heard at
http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/01/19/18669573.php

We will document every attack on our radio station by the Thug Hallinan Gang. Borgstrom's lawsuit should be sufficient warning that they had best keep their statements confined to the courtroom, the arbitration hearings and the NLRB hearings because it does not belong on listener-funded news programs.

Daniel Borgstrom also documents the horrors of the Thug Hallinan Gang, and their extraordinary foul-mouthed threatening manners befitting the CIA and other criminal gangs at:

Pacifica executive director Arlene Engelhardt is refusing to reinstate KPFA’s popular Morning Show, despite being offered $60,000 in pledges to pay for it from listeners. For more, listen to audio report, which aired on tonight’s Pacifica Evening News and is linked at http://www.SaveKPFA.org

I like it! The solution to KPFA's financial problems is to auction off time slots to whoever will pay the most for them. Great idea. Going once, going twice, SOLD for $60,000 to Mal Burnstein.

And the next time slot up on the block is .....

Rich people think they can buy EVERYTHING.

The really sad thing is that the money probably isn't even real. Some of it isn't - for sure. Because curious as I am, I made a pledge and not an insignificant one on that Save KPA site. I didn't hand over any money or any information about myself besides a fake name, fake email and fake mailing address. Save KPFA sent a thank you to my fake email address, but I'm never going to pay that pledge.

You don't incur payroll costs you can't afford based on signatures on a petition. You incur them based on cash in bank. In a year from now, if KPFA makes the 3.6 million it projects this year and doesn't post a half a million dollar deficit for the first time in 2 years, then you can have a conversation about whether or not you can afford more paid staff.

As for the imaginary 60K, maybe KQED will sell you a time slot for that.

No they probably won't ....

I think they charge more than that.
by Stop Sounding Crazy
Whoever "Stop the Thug Hallinan Gang" is, he should reconsider his strategy because he appears to be losing. The ranting and juvenile name calling is in stark comparison to the on point presentation by the people he apparently fears so much. Look at this post, he whines about a news item and rambles on with the name calling and repetitive posting of old material, YAWN. He posts Phelps questionable lawsuit against SAVEKPFA not once but twice, which was pretty well challenged when it was posted. YAWN Then he post a link to KPFA that has two fairly damning comments about the current morning show. Then he links to one of his own previous interminable ramblings. DOUBLE YAWN Then a little piece from the new general manager who says little of substance because he is very new to the job. Then he closes with a link to Daniel Borgstroms website and yet another rehashing of old grievances. TRIPLE YAWN So that's what he puts up.

Then a apparently somebody from SAVEKPFA, in response, puts up the news clip that is the subject of all the hand ringing. And BAM down goes "Stop the Thug Hallinan Gang"! Straight forward reporting about an obviously legitimate news item, that concisely questions the stated reasons for ending of the Morning Show. Two lines of text and one link did way more than the endless text and links by Thug to show that what is going on is more about politics that the stated reasons of money.

You guys are getting outplayed at every step by SAVEKPFA, you should probably think of a new strategy.

by Rich White Republican Way Privatize
60k to privatize The new morning mix is the answer that BET who is rich, white, and a republican in the closet would use the privatize tactic. 60k is what your worth, and now you think money can by you your time slot.. This is why people should really think again about the SLAVE KPFA slate, since they think they have the money they can slave kpfa to do what they want. Is this really what a community radio station needs, more people trying to privatize it, and make all the volunteers run the rest of it while they get paid for their slaving of kpfa. While everyone else is unpaid staff, and BET never represented them, nor did Amiee Allison. All they cared about was their checks, and now this proves that is still what they care about. Kpfa is a community radio station, and doesn't offer jobs for people to become rich of it. Apparently that is not the case when it comes to BET, and his white rich friends who want to privatize the new morning mix. If the general manager accepts this offer, it will cost him more to get them out again. Look at their lawyer fees, and the blackmailing of pledges to them by having access to these lists of supporter. BET is no good for the station, and never was that is why he got laid off... And neither is Slave KPFA/ Uncocerning the Listener through lies.
by listener-sponsor
Nope, I'm afraid the new "morning mix" is not only bad scab radio, it is a political hack job.

http://kpfaworker.wordpress.com/2010/12/19/pacifica-replaces-union-workers-with-political-allies/

Yeah, those unpaid staff stepped up out of the goodness of their hearts - not! Besides, why would KPFA pay people to do crappy shows? Lots of unpaid staff who had done great programming for years on the Morning Show -- as part of their service to community -- were also terminated along with Brian and Aimee. What about them?

Your focus on Brian shows your racism. Aimee Allison, a young woman of color, was also fired by Pacifica. In fact, the majority of those Pacifica laid off from the Morning Show are women and people of color. Pacifica's policies and inability to put radio first (prioritizing their own bureaucratic costs over KPFA's programming) also drove 7 workers - nearly all of them workers of color -- out of the station.

http://kpfaworker.wordpress.com/2010/11/12/exodus-of-staff-of-color-from-kpfa-station-cancels-upcoming-fund-drive/
by ANTI PRIVATIZING OF THE NEW MORNING MIX
Firing vs lay offs is a big difference, talk about listener sponsor being an agent of disinformation for SLAVE KPFA. Another white guy trying to feel good helping "people of color", and pretend he doesn't support the privatization of the new morning mix. Is this where the scabs of the slave kpfa/ and unconcerned with the listeners think they are the progressive ones by selling out the station, and it is ok for unpaid staff to be arrested for volunteering. Therefore, protecting property than people becomes more important to Slave KPFA, and now they want to privatize the show so they have full immunity to the bylaws of kpfa. What will happen next no more public station, and corporations will become under writers.
by Reality
640_10_years_of_kpfa_finances.pdf_600__1.jpg
This is why people were laid off. Because for three years, listener donations have been plummeting.

We can argue all day and all night about what's crappy and what isn't crappy and opinions are a dime a dozen, but in essence what matters is that you cannot keep doing the same things and expecting different results.

KPFA between 2007 and 2010 was a financial train wreck with listener donations going in one direction - steeply downwards.

Changes were made to reduce expenses and the last fund drive posted the highest daily totals in the last four years. That is what happened.

You don't have to like it, but you do need not to lie about it.
by it will stand
"Read It and Weep" (Reality)...why does that that graph and snarky post title/id sound familiar...

oh, Tracy Rosenberg has posted this a few times before, and sans fund drive periods, usually styles herself according to the latter. Not that anyone on TeamICR is at all opposed to anonymity...

BTW, I think I lost my copy of the 9/11 Book-of-the-Month Club list, could you repost that Thug Hallinan?. Don't forget the one by the guy who believes that space-based lasers brought the towers down, that was revolutionary. SaveKPFA is probably a Bilderberg/Trilateral Commission/Council on Foreign Relations plot anyway, just ask look at the brilliant analysis by BIG POTATO. Critics of Richard Phelps? CLEARLY Zionists, I mean, without question.

Hopefully whomever the alpha-Independent is on the good-ship ICR recognizes that having you for an ally is like going to a hooker for a hug.
by todd
Yeah, and Tracy and Richard et al are always so negative.

"KPFA's in the toilet, and its all the fault of concerned listeners!" Kind of like the "end of the world is coming!" You ignore it after a while.

She and her allies seem to have no imagination about how to make things better, and personally attack anyone who does.
by Elwood
Nothing personal, but you guys keep screaming that "Tracy" posted this and "Tracy" posted that. You sound a little paranoid and accusatory to me. I don't think Tracy Rosenberg has posted to Indybay on KPFA stuff since October or so, although she did do so during the election period occasionally. She always seems to post under her own name. What is your problem?

And while I'm not an expert or anything, last I heard she and Richard Phelps don't like each other much although neither is a fan of the Concerned Listeners/Save KPFA cabal.

I'd suggest the Tracy is the boogeyman thing is starting to sound a little stupid.
by The New morning mix Auction
How about the program with the hihgest bid gets the show, since if SLAVE KPFA think it can buy their air time back who will out bid the morning mix from 65k going once twice three times sold to the group with the highest bid. Talk about activist using capitalism to look progressive, and privatize the only community radio station. White guy with privilege can't get around their privilege, so they buy it.
by If it ain't broke, don't fix it
The animosity between the two is legendary, and indicative of the broader problem facing the ICR group: an inability to strategize. ICR is a group of people who dislike SaveKPFA methodology and MO, but lack cohesion or an alternative vision. Essentially, they are the Republicans of KPFA politics, offering nothing but continued cuts and no new ideas for generating revenue.

While the LSB has no authority over programing decisions, no one on the ICR side is claiming that The Morning Mix is anything other than a cost-cutting measure, not revenue-generator.

Phelps ought to challenge Rosenberg to a debate, since he frequently believes he is discrediting other viewpoints by the authors' refusal to meet him in public. It could be a KPFA fundraiser...

by An Unpaid Staffer
At least the Pacifica mangement / ICR crowd has stopped with the lie that the Morning Show staff was sacked because of money. Now it is clear it was for political reasons all along.
by What $ can not buy
60K does not creative talent make. Thank you, Pacifica.
by Pacifica is not a jobs program.
KPFA/Pacifica would be crazy to reverse the cuts in paid staff based on unverified, conditional, pledges for some part of the necessary money. Moreover, it's likely that the non-vaporware portion of such pledges is money that would have been donated anyway, if not for the blackmail campaign being organized by the entrenched staff clique.

By the way, the reason that layoffs mostly affected supporters of the clique is that most of the hiring for the last decade, if not longer, has been done by managers subordinate to that clique. The problem at KPFA is not politically-motived layoffs but the fiscally irresponsible, politically-motivated hirings that made those layoffs necessary.
by Richard Phelps, KPFA LSB and former Chair
The important debate that needs to happen now is between someone who can explain the truth of the last few years to combat the CL/Save KPFA lies and distortions, so that the listeners know the history and can decide for themselves.

Where are all the outspoken CLers and their anonymous hit mouths? Are they afraid of the truth getting out? You bet. Why won't people like Dan Siegel , BET, Lazar or Mark or Aileen from API central step up and defend their side when their words of disinformation can be challenged by the rationality of the truth? They are always putting out their BS from the cover of no rebuttal. Just like Fox news.

This is Pacifica the land of differing views, why do they hide behind solo performances and anonymous hit mouths and personal attacks if their points are so powerful? Are they afraid that the listeners will see through them? YOU bet they are.

I would be glad to donate my time to debate any of them in a fair program and raise money for KPFA/Pacifica. And if there is any parallel to the Republican Party here it is the CLers, who during their reign of tyrannical majority eliminated all the centers of democratic action at the station: Program Council and UPSO, not to mention their using the power of their staff and management insiders to prejudice every LSB election in so many ways. They have also made it clear that they want a narrow spectrum of views presented on the air, leaving out 911 issues, muzzling Flashpoints etc.
by Steel-cut oats
Funny Richard to see you bitch about how people don't discuss the substance of your posts, and then in turn around and act in kind. No commentary about issues between you and Rosenberg, ICR's lack of rudder, but plenty of hot air about your historicism. And what Phelps post would be complete without name-calling and conspiracism?

KPFA should hold an election and ask the listener-supporters one simple question: "Do KPFA members want The Morning Show reinstated with Brian Edwards-Tiekert and Aimee Allison?" Because really Richard, shouldn't the important debate be about enacting the listeners will, not yet another "KPFA History According to Richard Phelps" lecture?
by Ding Ding Ding!
"The important debate that needs to happen now is between someone who can explain the truth of the last few years to combat the CL/Save KPFA lies and distortions"

Right, don't you are Tracy have different theories in that regard?
by Francisco Ramirez
The Morning Mix is a good show and better than The Morning Show. Aimee Allison giggled and acted like she was doing the last hour of The Today Show while Brian Edwards-Tiekert was a victim of his own self-love. The show's more professional now except for Aileen Alfandary and her little editorials every newsbreak. I find it very interesting that we get so little news from Aileen but she makes time for her editorial.
If Brian and Aimee are as great as BE-T himself insists in these comments he keeps posting under other people's names, I'm sure that another Bay Area station will snap them up. Right?
They need to move on with their dull lives.
by Erin Errins
"The show's more professional now..."

wait, wasn't the point to have programing produced by the average Joe, or Jane, as it were? Wasn't professionalism the rallying cry of the SavfeKPFA gooneybird?

there is plenty you can get in this world without paying for it but professional, by definition, isn't one of them. Stop Thug Hallinan Gang could, for example, spend money on a critical thinking class and better understand how without exception his posts are a case-study in logical fallacy. Maybe I'll catalog his various lapses
by Tracy Rosenberg (tracy [at] media-alliance.org)
I don't know what this is all about, but I can assure the poster that Richard Phelps and I have a pretty similar analysis of the root problems at KPFA. We occasionally have tactical differences, who doesn't, but I can't imagine a debate between us would be very interesting. Alot of yes, uh-huh, I agree. If I must debate someone. I think Concerned Listeners/Save KPFA would be the only antagonist likely to generate some interesting conversation.

by Great Minds Think Alike
"We occasionally have tactical differences"

It would seem Richard isn't so light in his treatment of those differences, unless accusing Tracy of "undemocratic practices" is a term of endearment.

CLASSIC TRACY ROSENBERG!
by Richard Phelps, former Chair KPFA LSB
Sunday Sep 5th, 2010 9:42 AM

"I voted against the ballot book mailing myself (at the PNB Election Committee), but I can see both sides of it."

This is classic Tracy Rosenberg, rejecting the principle of "inclusive elections" to try to get a few votes and look open minded, just like a typical corporate politician putting power before principles.

If we are going to have elections they MUST be inclusive. There are not two sides to this issue if you are truly PROGRESSIVE. There was never two sides to women's right to vote or slavery or gay marriage, etc. for the true progressives of those times, despite the pseudo articulations of those that like to hang out near Jim Hightower's "double yellow lines".

If you don't send out the candidate statements and expect people to go on line to find them you will greatly decrease the numbers voting and increase the power of the $late mailer$, money dominating our elections. Who gets left out? Lower income people who don't own a computer and older people that have not gotten into computers. The lower income people, by the nature of our stratified society will be a larger percentage of women and people of color than the voter population as a whole. How hard is that to figure out if your primary goal is an "inclusive election" versus gaining personal power! Every study done on the voters rights movement of the civil rights era demonstrated that every impediment to voting, literacy tests, poll taxes or just a sheriff with a shotgun standing at the polling place door will reduce the voter turnout. Mostly common sense.

I encourage people to not vote for any CLers and only vote for 7-8 of the ICR people that have demonstrated to you true progressive values. That excludes Tracy Rosenberg based on what I have personally seen over the last few years. Tracy Rosenberg is responsible for there not being a unified listener slate for the last two elections. She walked away from discussions to create a unified campaign each time and I believe she did it so that she would not have to share power with PeopleRadio folks or other independent, knowledgeable and Mission before personal power listener activists.

Just one example of Tracy's undemocratic practices in last years election. Henry Norr, Aki and Chandra and others were not consulted as to the suggested rankings sent out by ICR. Had PeopleRadio folks or other independent democratically oriented individuals been involved that would not have been allowed to happen. PeoplsRadio didn't rank our candidates and if we had it would have been after a discussion and vote. There are many more examples and I am saving a few to respond to the personal attacts I expect to come for speaking truth about those that want power before Mission.

Please study the candidates and don't just check off people from a slate mailer. Thank you.
