Press Release:
Independent journalist files Public Records Act requests over blue whale killing
Fort Bragg, California
Independent journalist David Gurney has filed Public Records Act requests of both the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) and the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative (MLPAI), seeking records surrounding the incident of a blue whale strike that occurred off Fort Bragg, California on October 19, 2009.
Although the incident occurred in California state waters, and involved seafloor mapping for the MLPAI and the CNRA, responsibility for the investigation was shifted to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a federal agency. The California Department of Fish and Game has officially stated that they did not investigate the incident, even though it occurred within their jurisdiction of the three mile limit of state waters.
The 72 foot female blue whale was killed by the exploration vessel “Pacific Star”, operated by Fugro Inc., an oil, construction and mining company. Pacific Star was conducting illegal underwater sonar mapping surveys for the MLPAI. The vessel had neither a valid permit, nor the required marine mammal observers on board.
Mr. Gurney is investigating the conflicts of interest and corruption that have been rampant throughout the entire MLPA initiative. He is actively seeking information regarding the blue whale strike, and information on the subsequent cover-up of any valid investigation.
