Women taking their male slaves as concubines was a big "no no". The woman is the one is IS TAKEN, the man TAKES. Gender was a huge factor in Islamic tradition in the 9th century.

Muslim women placed conditions into their marriage contracts (ie, the use of concubines, moving away from their homes, etc).

In the 9th century, fathers were perfectly able to marry their children, either sex, off. Today, marriage is no longer compulsory once a child is an adult, and culturally there are social pressures, however it is no longer permissible to marry a child off.

The anology between marriage and slavery is a central element to in the book. Slavery is not like baseball cards, were not expungeable, they are more analogous to baseball players.
