KPFA Unpaid Staffer Message to Pacifica - Your Actions Hurt Progressives
The Morning Show folks had their ears to the ground. Is your plan to help local conservatives? I don’t think it is – I’m not a conspiracy nut – but the perhaps-unintended results are there. Give us back the Morning Show with Brian and Aimee before you completely ruin our station, and decimate its service as a vital conduit for local progressive activism.
To Arlene Engelhardt, Pacifica Executive Director:
Arlene – I hold you personally responsible for the harm you are causing our local progressive community. We have no local source other than the Morning Show to tell us what our Bay Area activists are doing and to inspire us to action.
How can you as a single individual take away my lifeline to vital information?
Did you know that Oakland just elected its first Asian and first female mayor?? This in face of Big money? What ‘s happening with the transition? How’s she going to face the huge budget deficit? Will her progressive roots show as she takes over as mayor?
What’s the deal with a longtime Oakland councilmember quitting? Will there be a new election? Will Quan choose the replacement?
Richmond’s Green activist mayor won a second term in office – even though Chevron fought her as did the police. What’s she doing in face of that kind of opposition? Some allies will sit on the Richmond City Council with her. What does that mean?
Sam Zell bought an election for $25,000 to reshape downtown Berkeley. Now what?
A new Bay Area progressive organization was launched a couple of weeks ago, with some 60 people reportedly in attendance at its first meeting. What’s that all about?
EBASE recently celebrated success on Measure C. After years of court fights in Emeryville, hotel workers are getting a living wage. What else is happening in Emeryville and its rising community activism?
And what’s happening with our local environmental, Haiti, peace, health, Sudan, Congo, Tibet, Burma, labor, homeless, peace.....activists? It's important to know what's happening internationally -- but how will we interact with that knowledge locally?

Mitch Jeseritch has low seniority and will have to be laid off as again KPFA has no money for payroll. See

Jeseritch joined with Brian Edwards-Tiekert to hire an anti-labor Republican Party law firm, Dhillon & Smith of San Francisco, with someone's money to sue Pacifica because they did not like the way the Local Station Board elections turned out, although their election frauding slate, with its Thug Hallinan expensive mailer claiming to raise money to save KPFA, won a majority of seats. This writer does not miss the Morning Show at all as it was just another Democratic Party campaign show, with constant interruptions for news bites from the AP newswire. If you want real news, including California news, see the World Socialist Website at
http://www.wsws.org/
with a story on California state workers' pensions being attacked by the Democrat-Republicans at:
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2010/dec2010/pens-d06.shtml
Their best feature is Workers' Struggles around the world, which may be found at:

As to institutionalized furloughs, as of January 1, the courts are now closed at noon on most Fridays.
After reading the wsws site in the morning, I always go to Global Research at
http://www.globalresearch.ca/
and the antiwar site at
http://www.antiwar.com/
Those 3 websites give far more news than the Morning Show ever did.
Apparently Judith Scherr and the rest of the Thug Hallinan Gang love having 3 Republican Party operatives at KPFA: Brian Edwards Tiekert, Mitch Jeseritch and Lewis Sawyer, the 3 plaintiffs in the Dhillon & Smith lawsuit, all draining the KPFA budget causing KPFA to take money from other stations and Pacifica, thus bringing down the entire network. This is clearly the agenda of the Thug Hallinan Gang and that is reactionary.

Progress finally made on a demand of many years to move Democracy Now to 7 a.m. drive time, which is by far the biggest fund raiser on KPFA to a time slot which by definition is a big fundraising time slot no matter what is there. And what has been blocked from garbage USA's cable TV is now on KPFA: Al Jazeera at 6 a.m. See the program schedule at
http://www.kpfa.org/programgrid
Arlene: When you get rid of Mitch Jeseritch and the Letters from Washington, if you do not have anything else to replace it, it can become once again a music slot. Given the lack of classical music on KPFA and the current full month of Xmas garbage on the local commercial classical music station (Nov 26 to Dec 25), how about an hour of classical music from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.? Keep up the good work!

Thank (choose your own deity) for Arlene Engelhardt. Putting AL Jazeera English at 6am and Democracy Now at 7am is marvelous news. Both of these shows at these times will fulfill the mission of KPFA and will raise more money for the station. The next step might be putting on some kind of local type show based on activism in the bay area and local music in the slot from 8am-11am.
Okay, where's the logic in THIS?
The CWA local passes a Resolution, forbidding any of its members with the seniority to sit on the KPFA Morning Show.
Then (paid)kpfaworker and (Kill!)SlaveKPFA.org launches a loud complaint campaign that there is no Morning Show on KPFA.
The self-interest here is self-evident.
The members of CWA 9415 want it both ways. Obviously they think the station is theirs.

"Campaign For New Priorities" A Front For pro-Democratic flacks and the "Save KPFA" Crew Wants Air Time On KPFA
This operation run by supporters of the "Save KPFA" Crew conveniently leave out the Democratic party which they support. "Save KPFA" supporters Michael Eisenscher, Jack Kurzweil and Norman Soloman are active supporters of making the Democratic party do the right thing and they want their new initiative on the KPFA airwaves.
Campaign for New Priorities
Our nation is deep in an economic crisis that can only be addressed by adopting New Priorities to create a sustainable economy for the 21st Century. Our people need our resources allocated to immediate and significant increases in domestic spending for jobs, infrastructure, new technologies, education, health care, environmental protection -- all those efforts that enhance the Common Good of our society.
Our nation needs foreign and defense policies that serve the authentic needs of maintaining our security in a world where the use of force should be the last resort, not the first response. Our foreign policy should serve the interests of global peace, not the interests of the military-industrial complex.
* Our military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan must end.
* The Pentagon budget must be dramatically cut.
* The rebuilding of our society must begin.
If you agree with these principles, we invite you to join us in signing the Declaration of Principles of the Campaign for New Priorities. Ask your organization, congregation, institution or agency to formally endorse it.
Based on support the Declaration receives in each community, the Campaign will then approach local elected officials to ask that a resolution be adopted by city councils, boards of supervisors and other governmental bodies calling on Congress to adopt these new priorities and that public hearings be held to take testimony from those most impacted by the crisis.
Who should sign? Anyone who supports these principles. Those who have been impacted by the economic crisis - by budget, service and program cuts, chronic unemployment, foreclosures, lack of health care, environmental degradation, or other effects of the crisis.
Who should endorse? Social, economic and racial justice organizations, unions, faith congregations, civic organizations, non-governmental service agencies, environmental organizations, youth and seniors organizations, and all other groups that agree with these principles.
Support this campaign: Personally sign this Declaration.

Campaign for New Priorities
Declaration of Principles
Our nation is deep in an economic crisis that can only be addressed by adopting New Priorities to create a sustainable economy for the 21st Century.
Our people need our resources allocated to:
Aid state and local government to restore and maintain public services, education, social programs, reemploying teachers, police, firefighters and other workers who provide vital public services;
Create jobs in both the private and public sectors by rebuilding our outdated and failing physical infrastructure and our deteriorating cities, and developing and investing in new technologies for a sustainable energy future;
Finance renewable energy programs and environmental cleanup to put our country on an ecologically sustainable path in the 21st Century, creating stable jobs paying good incomes that will stay in the United States;
take emergency measures to address the dramatic increase in poverty and inequality in our country, providing for decent food, shelter, education, health care for all, repair the social safety net and protect Social Security and Medicare. Instead our resources are being wasted on prosecuting endless wars.
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are a consequence of a foreign policy that has used force of arms as a substitute for diplomatic engagement, and that so far has cost us more than $1 trillion of borrowed money - a debt to be borne by future generations. These wars have generated increased threats to our national security as well as death and injury to thousands in our military and uncounted Iraqi and Afghan civilians who have also suffered physical and environmental destruction of their societies.
Our total military budget, at more than $700 billion per year, accounts for 43% of global military spending. More than two decades after the end of the Cold War, many billions of dollars are being allocated to maintain and modernize our enduring arsenal of nuclear weapons and to add to the staggering number of U.S. military bases on foreign soil. We do not need this to provide for the legitimate defense needs of the people of the United States.
Our nation needs foreign and defense policies that serve the authentic needs of maintaining our security in a world where the use of force should be the last resort, not the first response. Our foreign policy should serve the interests of global peace, not the interests of the military-industrial complex.
*Our military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan must end. *The Pentagon budget must be dramatically cut. *The rebuilding of our society must begin.
We call upon the Northern California Congressional delegation to commit to the rapid and safe withdrawal of all of our troops and contractors from Iraq and Afghanistan and the dismantling of all U.S. military bases in those countries. We urge them to support efforts to help rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan with aid channeled through established international organizations. Our nation's security can best be strengthened by reliance upon diplomacy and negotiation, and on economic development and education rather than more troops, weapons and war.
We call upon the Northern California Congressional delegation to adopt these New Priorities:
* End the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq
* Major systematic reductions in the Pentagon budget
* Immediate and significant increases in domestic spending for jobs, infrastructure, new technologies, education, health care, environmental protection, an effective social safety net, defense of Social Security and Medicare against threatened cuts, and all those efforts that enhance the Common Good of our society.

I don't think we can assume that the members of the CWA East Bay local neccesarily back their leaders in their actions against the Pacifica foundation . If for no other reason the CWA Bargaining Unit at KPFA is tiny compared to that at ATT.
And most member's concerns are probably far more about their working conditions and Job security at that Telecom Giant than two layoffs at KPFA.
Some may wonder why the Local's leaders are so hardline towards the Leaders of this improverished Non profit but are more often than not so concilatory towards the truly Anti-Union ATT execs ?

On the contrary to Ms. Scherr, i would be more curious to know what the plan of action is going to be to replace the Morning Show- or what type of new morning show would be appropriate to have right now in these times we live in. I am sure the type of programming that Ms. Scheer recommends will come back, it is just a matter of when it will come back and how long it will take the new KPFA management, GM, and the new elected board together with the ED to put a plan together.
KPFA is going through a moment of transition and not only programming changes need to be looked at but also organizational structural changes that would take into account a new budget i imagine.
I would hope that as we speak new programs and proposals are being put on the table and I would be curious to know if there is a transition development team in place to help develop these new structures for KPFA. Hopefully community and listener input will be part of this ahead in the process and we can all have an input in decision making and what is best for KPFA, its mission, and its purpose.

I wouldn't want to interfere with Ms. Scherr in speaking on behalf of all progressives, but if I may speak merely on my own behalf, I'm pretty excited about bringing Al-Jazeera news to 5 major US metropolitan markets and having Democracy Now on at drive time in the Bay Area. Both those changes strike me as great news for Bay Area progressives.
I agree that a locally-produced AM interview show is probably a good idea and I hope the resources are there so something creative and interesting will move into the 8-9am hour (or 8-10am hours?) soon. I hope everyone reading Indybay will donate so that can happen and happen without delay.

Of the many facets to this discussion, it seems odd to me that no one asks the listeners what they want. KPFA includes many activists in it's audience, but they/we are but a fraction of the whole.
How can you as a single individual take away my lifeline to vital information?
I'm at a loss as to how to respond to anyone who gets vital information from the Morning Show.
But, there is a serious question that should be answered: are the firings of the people involved with the Morning Show consistent with the seniority provisions of the CWA contract. And, if so, why should others with more seniority be fired instead?
I keep asking about that, and never get an answer.

Judith Scherr used to be a reporter for the Berkeley Daily Planet until they went broke and had to lay off all the staff.
Now she is a volunteer with the KPFA News Department who does occasional segments for the AM show.
The lament is not about losing access to information: it's about losing personal access to the microphone.

In the above article you will see that the Concerned Listeners voted down a proposal to have the budget problems done according to the union contract. And their is other evidence to demonstrate that their "union" loyalty is a game they play with their management friends and non-union group members.

Ms. Scheer's valedation identifying herself as a listener and member of the unpaid staff renders your post redundant; most people who listen to the Evening News are similarly familiar with her reporting.
I like the point that Gregg McVicar makes; activists are a part of the mix that constitutes the broader KPFA community. Activism is manifest in a multitude of undertakings and ought not be bound by orthodoxy. I personally differentiate between the desires of the listeners, and those of listener-supporters; I would hypothesise that a plurality of the population satisfied with the removal of Brian Edwards-Tiekert and Aimee Allison as hosts of The Morning Show fall into the former category. I feel this is the same crowd that has spent years complaining at LSB meetings that KPFA doesn't 'speak for the trees', or isn't sufficiently anti-capitalist, or pro-vegan et al, and has created the false dichotomy that anyone who doesn't embrace the most extreme elements Berkeley aesthetic is anathema.
That was a rather long wind for what was support to be a short puff inre: what the listeners want: I want The Morning Show back, with Mr. Edwards-Tiekert and Ms. Allison hosting. I want KPFA to stay sane, to serve as a nexus for progressivism, and a phalanx against the far Right and the far Left.
