KPFA should learn from New Agers
Today KPFA is in financial disarray after years of living beyond its means. And the same people who brought this crisis about are now pushing yet another unworkable budget. To broadcast their unrealistic demands, they've taken over KPFA's airwaves.
KPFA SHOULD LEARN FROM NEW AGERS

by Daniel Borgström
This morning I was crying my KPFA woes on the shoulder of a friend who shared with me an experience of his own, which happened some decades ago. My friend was then a member of a New Age group dedicated to the study of A Course in Miracles. The woman who founded and ran the group set up a non-profit corporation which required a board, whose duties included making legal judgments on the finances of the group.
My friend was a member of this board, consisting of about five persons. On reviewing her projects, the board determined that they were not properly funded. When they brought this financial discrepancy to her attention, she assured them, "God will provide."
And this being a board of New Age miracle seekers, the very predictable reply should have been, "Yes, you are so right. God will indeed provide."
However, that's not what happened. Instead, this board of true believers replied, "Corporation law does not recognize God as a provider."
The board told her to get the group finances in order. Having no other choice, she complied.

The phrase "God will provide" in your post seems to match Pacifica's attitude towards replacing the Morning Show. The Morning Show raised 25% of the pledges in any drive. It raised three times what the salaries cost and as a result indirectly supported other shows.
Yet Pacifica national management cut it while admitting they had no plans for what to replace it with. This is the dangerous attitude of the Pacifica national management which is willing to cut a major fundraising show with no advance thought on who to replace it. Anyone interested in the future of KPFA should emulate the people in your post and demand that Pacifica reconsider their action from purely a financial viewpoint if nothing else.

Chris,
The Morning Show raises large amounts because it airs during prime time. The next hosts are also likely to raise a large amount.
The problem was that the station was living beyond its means. Sooner or later, that would mean bankruptcy--the end of KPFA. In which case ALL of the staff, including you Chris, would be out on the street looking for new jobs.
I do NOT want to see that happen. Therefore I'm supporting Arlene Engelhardt's cutbacks.

If there was a CWA contract that said - In the event of financial exigency where layoffs need to be made, then they should be made by determining the personnel associated with the lowest fund drive totals per hour - then that would be a valid argument.
But that is not what the contract says about how layoffs are to be carried out.

These straw man arguments really need to stop. There is no condition in the contract that links immunity to layoffs with fundraising totals per hour of the time slots that programming employees are associated with.
None at all.

I've donated during the Morning Show because it's a convenient time, and the fundraising pitch transitions from Democracy Now. My favorite shows are Flashpoints and Voices of the Middle East. The Morning Show is not a favorite of mine at all. It's inaccurate to link donation levels to a show's popularity. I hope Democracy Now is moved to the 7 am time slot.
Support for KPFA is essential now. Read something besides the disinformation.
