Resolution to Support San Francisco Mime Troupe
National Tour in Conjunction with 100th Anniversary of the Triangle Fire
Whereas, 2011 will be the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Fire in New York
City which killed dozens of mostly women garment workers who were locked
in their building and could not escape the fire; and
Whereas, in conjunction with this commemoration the San Francisco Mime
Troupe http://www.sfmt.org which is an Tony award winning Equity union theatrical
group is proposing a national tour of the United States in conjunction with this
historic event; and
Whereas, this years San Francisco Mime Troupe play “Posibilidad, or Death of
the Worker” is about the struggle of garment workers in the US and Argentina;
Whereas, The importance to commemorate this event and to educate workers
today in America about labor’s history of struggle for workers rights and health
and safety on the 100th anniversary is critical; and
Whereas, the issues of 100 years ago are still relevant to workers in the United
States today who face attacks on their jobs and health and safety rights,
Therefore be it Resolved the San Francisco Labor Council endorses the national
Triangle Fire Commemoration Tour of the San Francisco Mime Troupe and
encourages trade unions and all unions to contribute and support this tour to
make it a success.
Submitted by David Williams, SEIU 1021, and adopted unanimously by the San
Francisco Labor Council on September 27, 2010.
