11/9/10 KPFA replaces Morning Show & Brian ET with KPFT show

by Hurrah!
At 6:30 p.m. on Monday, November 8, 2010, the whining supporters of the Concerned Listeners/Save KPFA reactionaries announced the best news we the listeners have heard on that Democratic Party promotional "newscast" in many years: The entire Morning Show and Brian Edwards Tiekert are being replaced by a Los Angeles KPFT program effective 11/9/10. For the first time in many years, we might have something better to listen to in the morning. Let's give it a try on 11/9/10.
It just shows, if you live long enough, something good will happen. There are sure to be more layoffs since the one thing that governs all else is lacking at KPFA: M-O-N-E-Y.

GOOD RIDDANCE TO THE ENTIRE MORNING SHOW AND BRIAN EDWARDS-TIEKERT

Here are the 2 most important sentences from an excellent analysis of the financial crisis at KPFA, perpetrated by the Concerned Listeners/Save KPFA Gang as they were the majority when $1 million disappeared, including the entire reserve:

"The station must reduce its staff headcount for one sad but simple reason: there is no money to continue paying all current employees, there are no reserves to cover the shortfall, and there's no possibility of making it up by cutting other expenses. As of Sept. 1, 2010, our station had the largest payroll and the largest deficit in the Pacifica network."

And below are all of the supporters of this till-tapping gang who should be removed immediately and replaced with volunteer community programming, and please reduce the evening news to a half hour and move Democracy Now to 7 a.m. with no repeats.

Here are the staff supporters:
C.S. Soong, Co-host, “Against the Grain”
Mitch Jeserich, “Letters to Washington,” Producer & Host
Brian Edwards-Tiekert, “Morning Show,” Producer and Host
Mark Mericle, Co-Director, “KPFA News”
Aileen Alfandary, Co-Director, “KPFA News”
Bonnie Simmons, Host, “The Bonnie Simmons Show,” former KPFA LSB, Pacifica National Board
Philip Maldari, “Sunday Show,” Producer & Host
Kris Welch, “Living Room” & “Saturday Morning Talkies,” Producer & Host
Miguel Guerrero, Web Producer & Producer, “Rock and Rebellion”
Jan Etre, Crafts Fair Coordinator
Laura Prives, “Morning Show,” Executive Producer
Sasha Lilley, “Against the Grain,” Producer & Host
Max Pringle, News Reporter
John Hamilton, News Producer & Anchor
Rose Ketabchi, “Free Speech Radio News,” Technical Producer, KPFA News Co-Anchor
Scott Pham, “Free Speech Radio News,” Technical Producer
Derk Richardson, Host of the “Hear and Now”

oh okay: we see at least two people on this list who are unpaid staff, David Gans and Bonnie Simmons, so technically then 'KPFAworker.org' is then qualified to represent all unpaid staff on its site?

by rekzkarz
Wow, talk about mis-representing the situation!
Actually, your reporting on the issue is too biased to be helpful.

How about cutting exec pay before cutting paid staff?
Why jump to layoffs? If pay drops, shouldn't exec staff get cut & pay rates drop?

Question --> what is KPFA's strongest locally produced show? The Morning Show.
So really this is an attack on the station and on Berkeley member supported radio.
by Hurrah!
The reason anything in the morning raises money is because it is a good time slot. Pacifica Foundation is now being interviewed by the thieves, including Arlene Shithead Alfendarry who kept interrupting the good people this morning November 9 at 7 a.m. instead of giving us the new Los Angeles program. What a bunch of arrogant bastards. Philip Maldari is lying when he complains about violating union contracts. He is nothing more than a Democratic Party shithead. Arlrene Englehardt of Pacific Foundation, the employer, finally did something to save not only KPFA but also Pacifica, the party which signed the union contract. This has gone on SINCE THE 1990s when their predecessors, the Pat Scott Gang, tried to destroy KPFA. This gang of thieves has terrorized previous general managers who wanted to make changes so that the general managers had to leave. To describe them as a gang is to be polite. They are all vicious, evil, arrogant fuckheads, and I do not normally use foul language, but that it all we have in English to describe the stinking evil bastards that constitute the thieving destroyers of KPFA. FUCK YOU ARLENE ALFENDARY, PHILIP MALDARI, THE HALLINAN BROTHERS, AND ALL THE REST OF YOU STINKING DEMOCRATIC PARTY THIEVING THUGS. I am turning to my favorite music station now, which I have been listening to for years as the Morning Show has been a disaster for most of this past decade. We will try again November 10 to see if we finally have a new program. FIRE THE ENTIRE SHITHEAD THIEIVING GANG LISTED ABOVE NOW.

That anyone paid Aileen Alfandary to read word for word from AP without credit is amazing. That AP never sued is damn lucky.
Aileen Alfandary is, was and always will be bland.
Brian Edwards-Tiekert sucked up constantly and finally was rewarded.
Equally true is not only were Greens shut out (even by faux Green Aimee) of the debate, KPFA was suddenly scared of the other side. Once upon a time, they'd book right wingers and take them on making for lively exchanges.
The Morning Show was too much of an NPR wanna be.

Join the Rally to Save Hard Knock, Flashpoints and Full Circle on Thursday, Nov. 11, 4:30 p.m., in front of KPFA and the Pacifica network, 1925-1929 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Berkeley.

Recent emails are talking about how Hard Knock Radio and Flashpoints, both primetime radio shows on KPFA, and the apprenticeship showcase Full Circle may be on chopping block. Giving credence to these attacks, Weyland Southon, the executive producer of Hard Knock Radio, just accepted a severance package and the station has begun to download Michael Eric Dyson radio shows, with the plan being to appease Hard Knock listeners with a soothing politically safe, academia-approved national Black voice

Its difficult to navigate this civil war taking place at Pacifica, but I think its very telling that everyone who is attacking the Union staff members are doing so anonymously. Who are you Hurrah? What is your role at the station?
by pablo
The insensitivity and outright meanness of the anonymous "Hurrah!" - cheering that real people are going to lose their jobs - is outrageous! The ignorant misidentification of KPFT as an L.A. station and the comment about KTLA (a commercial AM station in L.A.) shows who is really out of touch with reality here.
by Peace Witch
My initial post named KTLA (the commercial progressive affliate) as part of the Pacifica network. I meant KPFT.

When people on Indybay write fast and passionately about fairly Byzantine and emotionally-charged subjects, they sometimes get some details wrong. It shouldn't reflect the gist of their arguments. For the record, the Pacifica-owned station from Los Angeles for the 7am-9am slot replacing the Morning Show is KPFK. We will find out tomorrow whether this show is any good. Let us hope it is better than the bland Democratic Party fixated Morning Show.
I would also like to note that people on many sides to this debate have used pseudonyms. Using pseudonyms has been a time-honored tradition on Indybay and in radical writing. People should talk about issues, and not which name others are using. It feels like an ad hominem attack.

'Hurrah!' is Tracy Rosenberg. The syntax matches her other articles on Indybay and the ICR website.
I regard with a skeptical eye all this rhetoric about Chop from the Top and Cut the ED and CFO's pay .
When the incompendent and politically dishonest Lem Lem Riggio was at the helm of KPFA there were no calls to cut her pay (85 K ) . Why ? Because she was the Czar to Brian Edwards-Tiergert Rasputin . She did as she was told .
She was finally fired because she ''forgot '' for 14 months a check for 375 K . That must have added to the financial crisis .
When La Varn Williams mentioned that on the air the usual loud mouthed Brian ET changed the subject .
i can imagine why . Since Lem Lem didn't do anything without his advice He must have known about the ''missplaced ;;check .
Lies Lies Lies !!!!!
But no '' Union Busting '' . The Biggest lie yet .
by The Second Inning of a Long Game
It was an awesome show this morning, thanks for bringing it to our attention! It's up on the KPFA Archives in case you missed it.

What happens next, Englehardt and Rosenberg bring in armed thugs just like Berry and her crew in 1999? Stay tuned, it's far from over at KPFA, thank goodness.

A published hit list. Nice. At least the would-be Bolsheviks are starting to get honest about wanting to purge all whose politics they disagree with.

Good riddance to Mr. Tiekert, having racist union busters like Randy Shaw on your show really help to push you out of your spot. I have listen to KPFA for years and you guys always seem to have this poverty pip on with his nonsense and never have any of us union members say anything about what is happening in the workplace with us, you have really done the community at large a disservice -- so you must reap what you sow. Stop the crying and move on or get your union to represent you. Next time do it right and serve the community instead of promoting union busters.

I have listened to talk radio for most of my life around the planet and I find Aimee Allison and Brian Edwards-Tiekert to be some of the better talk show host interviewers. Topic choice, intelligent questions and an ability to string sentences together without um's and er's in a logical and rational manner made these 2 highly professional. To me it seems insane that KPFA management would let these people go. I used to wake up to NPR, but for the past 4 years I found KPFA morning show more relevant, and I contributed at the fund drives. What do I wake up to now?
A comment from this morning's discussion was on the cumbersome KPFA election process. I kinda agree - I get a thick booklet with all the proposed board nominees, and I have little clue as to whom to vote for. Sure I can spend 2 hours researching the numerous nominees, but when one has a full time job, and as a full time single parent with kids to raise, I opt out hoping that sanity will prevail and the correct choices will get made by KPFA management. Listening to this morning's discussion, I distinctly got the impression that chronic management issues are present at KPFA. The suggestion that the low voter response and election methodology can result in elected people not well matched to the tasks required seems plausible. A better way of managing this liberal radio station is required. Radio stations like this with professional interviewers like we just had are required.
