This is the third of a series of three films about Palestinians committed to resist nonviolently Israel's occupation, and Israelis who stand with them against injustice. We call the series: Palestine/Israel: Why Not Peace?
This is the story of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, where young Arabs and Jews perform and live side by side. The Orchestra was conceived in 1999 by Israeli musician Daniel Barenboim and Palestinian intellectual Edward Said, who together created a workshop for young musicians from Israel and various Arab countries. The film is about what music can do: the way it can transcend cultural barriers, bring people together, defeat prejudice and overcome religious and political differences. For Daniel Barenboim, the orchestra is a symbol for what could be achieved in the Middle East. "West-Eastern Divan" refers to a collection of poems by Goethe. Sponsored by the BFUU Social Justice Ctee as part of the Conscientious Projector Film Series Donations appreciated. No one turned away. Wheelchair accessible.
