Big win for SaveKPFA slate in KPFA's local board election
The SaveKPFA slate has won a big victory in elections to KPFA’s local governing board. Listeners elected SaveKPFA members to six of nine open seats.
The top vote-getter in the election, Mal Burnstein said, “I believe that the results here indicate that the listener-members do not want an explicitly sectarian station. They want a station that presents varying points of view, civil discourse, controversy and comment; a station where ideas and facts not readily available elsewhere can get a hearing; a place where the arts, literature, music and theater are valued.”
“In short, they want a return to the basic principles of Pacifica,” said Burnstein. “This election seems to be a vindication of our beleaguered and underpaid staff, laboring tirelessly during this economic slump. We owe them real thanks. “
The unofficial results show that along with Mal Burnstein, SaveKPFA members Jack Kurzweil, Margy Wilkinson, Matthew Hallinan, Tanya Russell and David Saldana were elected. Those winning election from the Independents for Community Radio slate were Tracy Rosenberg, Hyun-Mi Kim and Cynthia Johnson.
The SaveKPFA candidates were elected in a landslide, despite an election process that was consistently biased against them. The local election supervisor charged with conducting a fair election admitted that she saw her role as “neutralizing” the SaveKPFA candidates because they had support from many KPFA staff members.
SaveKPFA says one of its first priorities will be to advocate for a “Sustainable KPFA” budget that asks the parent Pacifica National organization to share in the financial pain and back off its demand for staff cuts that would decimate the station’s operations. The lame duck KPFA board of directors is expected to approve a budget at its October 16th meeting at 11 am at the south branch of the Berkeley Public Library. The new board will be seated in December.
KPFA staff members also elected three staff representatives to the local governing board. Two of the three staff members, David Gans and Lewis Sawyer, supported the SaveKPFA slate. Shahram Aghamir is a member of the rival Independents for Community Radio.
KPFA is the nation’s oldest listener sponsored radio station and the flagship station of the Pacifica Radio network.

The Concerned Listeners appropriated the name of a truly heroic group.
The Concerned Listeners introduced the massive mailing of slate flyers, so KPFA elections are now determined by the group that can raise the most money.
The SaveKPFA , spread the following falsehood in the closing days of the campaign:
“Three members of KPFA’s Local Station Board who sit on the Pacifica National Board–Tracy Rosenberg, Joe Wanzala, and Shahram Aghamir–have drawn up a list of their staff enemies who they are demanding be laid off, according to a misdirected email.’,
so now KPFA elections have joined the realm of dirty politics of Carl Rove.
Not a good sign for the future of KPFA.

You know, the listeners who vote are not as stupid as the average Karl Rove-led sheep. One of the characteristics of direct democracy is sometimes people win that you did not vote for. Fancy that. But it comes with the territory. Frankly I think that all this talk for all these years about the "10,000 in the streets of Berkeley because we wanted to kick out the entrenched staff" is a bunch of hooey. There would not have been "10,000 in the streets of Berkeley" had it not been for the staff struggle against the former board regime -- and some of you were quite happy to use the staff members you hated to at least cling to the station when it was under threat of being sold, only to turn on them and claim their victory for themselves when it was over. Nobody really cares what happened nearly 20 years ago, and most of that staff is long gone except for some notable exeptions who need to get over it so the station can continue to move forward with the fresh voices it has managed to bring aboard in the last 10 years since the "takeback."
Maybe you'd prefer Richard Phelps, Steve Zeltzer or Tracy Rosenberg climbing towers and running payroll -- and reporting news -- to keep KPFA going, but I think I prefer leaving it to those who know how.

For the past several days, the shows are not available to listen to at the KPFA website. Anyone know about this situation? Thanks.

FACT:
On at least two days during the election CL biased staff went on the air, in gross violation of elections rules, and attacked slates and candidates running against CL. So I guess the Local Election Supervisor was right. And the above is just another CL/Save KPFA lie.
What does it mean when you win by cheating??? Does that have anything to do with Pacifica's Mission??? It is this kind of behavior that is hurting KPFA/Pacifica in terms of listerner loyalty and thus fundraising.

The election results have not yet been certified yet . For good reason . Many listeners and candidates have serious questions that they want resolved. Like will there be some sort of action for the On Air attacks explictly against one of the ICR candidates and two of her allies and implictly against anyone running against or opposed to the '' Concerned Listeners ''and their small group of staff allies ? Did those attacks taint the results especially for the staff election ?
What about the use of the name '' Save KPFA '' which falsely claimed the legacy of a large coalition who did '' Save KPFA '' in the 90's ? That improper use did give the '' Concerned Listeners '' group a obviously unfair advantage .
In all fairness these issues and others have to have some sort of resolution before the results can be ceritified .

The Concerned Listeners (Listeners Concerned that the Listeners Not Have Shared Governance in their Community Station) who changed their name to "Save KPFA" (from Democratic Governance, a Range of Alternative Opinions from the Left, and Involvement of Local Communities) have again used their access to money to pull the wool over the eyes of their dedicated followers plus uninformed voters - the Wellstone Democratic leftists for democratic centralism (hierarchical dominance) and appeal to "moderate" progressives in mass organizations, and the Alameda County Labor Council, which routinely endorses their candidates without interviewing any others - to win a majority on the KPFA Local Board, with several costly mailers, and scare letters with lies about what the pro-democratic (small d) advocates want - such as:
an all volunteer station, no music, all "conspiracy" programs, far leftists who want to take over the station - and much more, but ?? - I'm not on their mailing list - and last but not least, a supposed hit list of popular programs & programmers (it was actually a union members seniority list) which terrified staff and others.
Their plans for the station have included "professionalizing" the programmers, eliminating radical programming like Flashpoints and Guns & Butter & youth programming which offend "moderate" "progressives", feature national instead of local programming, do away with elections, do away with the Program Council, run the finances into the ground, get grants for fundraising, cut LSB meetings, have the professional programmers and managers run the station, de-recognize the Unpaid Staff Organization, cut down on unpaid staff; cultivate major funders, attack the Media Alliance - does this sound like NPR?
Does this sound like our free speech radio could be lost?
We need to hang in there.

The original SaveKPFA was about saving the Pacifica’s mission of listener-sponsored radio.
The faux-SaveKPFA is about saving the paid staff positions which increased significantly in number after 9-11 and is now straining the station's budget during these recessionary times.
Station can make the hard choice of going back to the pre 9-11 number of paid staff positions and save the Pacifica’s misson of listener-sponsored radio, or keep the post 9-11 number of paid staff positions which would mean relying on underwriting and tossing out the Pacifica’s mission of listener-sponsored radio.

The physical machine that is the archive server is broken and is in the process of being repaired/replaced.
However, a question like this is answered much faster and quicker by calling the station itself, instead of posting to a story on Indymedia and figuring that at some point someone will answer and that the person answering will actually know what they are talking about.

To "voter" ("Listeners aren't That Stupid")
I thought Zeltzer, Rosenberg, and Phelps were LSB candidates - not would be news people.
However I must say I was happy when the ICR majority chose a PROFESSIONAL finance expert as the LSB treasurer. He replaced the CL choice of Brian Edwards-Tiekert. This treasurer warned of the unsustainable KPFA finances, which was a relief after the loss of KPFA's $5oo,ooo deficit spending down of their previously $1 million surplus in a 2-year period, with little guidance from Edwards-Tiekert, or concern that KPFA did not fulfill its requirement by Pacifica to cut down on paid staff hours in order to avert a financial meltdown. (Instead this group did hire more paid staff.)
He brought in his last unsustainable budget without submitting it to the LSB members beforehand, so that they had no time to contest it.
He did complain about WBAI's debt to the Pacifica network, and the fact that we have to chip in to support our parent Pacifica network - but then he never mentioned that it was his faction's defense of the thuggish management and supporting JUC organization which allowed this fiscal mismanagement to go on.
Then there was the CL-allied manager, not a radio professional or professional manager, who hid a $275,ooo bequest check for a year, until it expired, and whose firing was deplored on the airwaves in the same manner as the last dirty trick of the fake "hit list" fabrication mentioned in these comments.
One would wonder if the group that puts their trust in "professionals" was trying to bankrupt the station so it could bring in - more "professionals"! But different ones than the Pacifica CEO LaVarn Williams, a professional finance person, formerly of the KPFA LSB, who has been making progress with the Pacifica finances and has been a defender of the democratic Bylaws.
On "voter's" other point:
For an interesting examination of the core staff role in Saving KPFA, see this article by Maria Gilardin, a co-founder of the REAL Save KPFA in the 90's and until the early 2000's.
Hint: it was less than supportive and very late in the game.
Why Did the Staff Not Prevent the 10-year Corporate Raid?

Will we have to Save KPFA one more time, this time from the Concerned Listeners?

For 5 years I've been attending LSB meetings, watching the CL'ers in action, and I've come to see the spokespersons of that group as people who consistently lie and cheat. Of that there were numerous examples in this as well as in past elections. But what else might they have done? Could they, for example, have somehow managed to acquire extra ballots? I'm not saying they did, but given the CL'ers past record, I think the possibility needs to be investigated.
For more information:
http://danielborgstrom.blogspot.com/
The Pacifica National Election Supervisor at first sent ballots, but not the Candidate Booklet, in mid-August. The "SaveKPFA" postcard arrived with the ballot and was the only literature available to the voter for four weeks. Imagining KPFA needed saving, voters dutifully voted the SaveKPFA slate. A month after ballot delivery, the official Candidate Booklet arrived.
The slate did as well as it did because it had the cash to mail an attractive postcard which arrived with the ballot; voters wanted to "Save KPFA;" and the Election Supervisor wanted to economize. Pacifica's poor financial condition amplified the influence of money on the election.
So let KPFA enjoy its new board of upper middle class elderly caucasians. They're retired and may choose to use their twilight time to do the work. But do they have the stamina and any idea how the potential new audience uses sound? Nope. The 2011-12 Board will provide little guidance toward building a new audience, and mortality will continue to erode KPFA's audience.

This made-up "talk for all these years" is just another example of the blatant lies that are the hallmark of the group that now calls itself 'Save KPFA'.
By the way, the overwhelming majority of those who marched against the 1999 lockout had no knowledge of the treachery of the entrenched paid staff, treachery that included (but was certainly not limited to) actively going along with the firings of Bill Mandel, Mama O'Shea, and dozens of other individual and collective volunteer programmers.

Save kpfa alias concerned listeners have been in charge for years. Most of the prime time programing is safe kpfa people ;Morning show , news ect...... and the station is tanking.Every fund drive more laborious and bringing less money .Save kpfa have been acting like arrogant assholes and they now claiming they won the election while the official result have not been yet confirmed. If they were as great as they say kpfa will not be on the edge of this financial precipice.I listen often on line at kpfk .their fund drive are short and extremelly succesful. but they have less npr program and their greatest complain is the pacifica berkeley news.May be its because bay erea demographie is changing. I use to love going to harbin hot spring where the water used to be pristine.Today its become more like a herpes infected fecal pond.Signe of the times may be.
But anyway most of us have been so troubled the last few years by fascist action of the concerned listener we did not even bother to pledge any money or consequently vote. Thanks the internet to the real progressive people you can always listen to kpfk and let this thugs hold on the dead rat they made of this station.

I know that Phelps wouldn't let a $375,000 check sit around for a week much less a year and he worked in radio before he became a lawyer. How many CLers have real radio experience? So much for your "professionalism" crap?

Thank goodness we now have Mal Burnstein, Margy Wilkinson, and Tanya Russell to take care of those jobs.

Last year, they had a full-color postcard underwritten by Noelle Hanrahan and sent using her nonprofit postal permit. Was there a falling-out? Or has she already run out of the money she sued out of KPFA?
THE CONCERNED LISTENERS SAVE KPFA OR WHAT EVER THEY WANT TO CALL THEMSELVES ARE THE FALSE VOICE OF DISSENT . THE REASON WHY KPFA WAS CREATED 60 YEARS AGO IS TO FIGHT WHITE RACIST OLD RICH SUPREMACIST LIKE THEM. THEY ARE LAME BORING TASTELESS WITH NO IMAGINATION CAUGHT IN THEIR MENTAL LOVES FOR THEMSELVES. THEY ARE THE LAST GATE KEEPER OF THE SYSTEM AND THE MOST NARROW MINDED. WHY DONT THEY START THEIR OWN RADIO STATION UNSTEAD OF FORCING THEMSELVES ON US LIKE PIGS. THE DEFINING MOMENT WAS WHEN THEY RAPED NADRA FOSTER WITH THE HELP OF THE SYSTEM WE SUPPOSE TO CONFRONTE. THATS WHEN THE STATION STARTED TO TANK BECAUSE EVERY SINGLE AFRICAN AMERICAN IN BAY EREA KNEW THIS THUGS WERE JUST A FRAUD.
The below motion was just passed by the National Election Committee of the PNB:
"The National Election Committee of the PNB strongly recommends to the National Election Supervisor that the 2010 KPFA staff election uncertified results be invalidated due to gross and repeated violations of the Fair Campaign Provisions and the election redone prior to November 15, 2010."
The staff election was clearly impacted by the misinformation
spread by programmers starting on 9/28 and CL/SK candidates on air
starting on 9/29, I believe, about staff cuts by KPFA PNB members.
There were other violations and it remains to be seen if
and how they will be handled.
However, no KPFA programs from 9/21 to 10/6 were archived!
Explanations given have been: "Audio presented during KPFA Fund Drives often originates elsewhere and therefore is not posted." - from Against the Grain website
"The server is down - The physical machine that is the archive server is broken and is in the process of being repaired/replaced."
by Chris Stehlik of KPFA -Tuesday Oct 12th, 2010 12:06 PM
Coincidentally, the pacificaelections2010 website was also out of commission briefly, having been attacked, and has lost some of its content.
The real question is will KPFA/Pacifica survive the CL/SK as a community free speech listener supported station rather than another NPR.
Also, Tracy Rosenberg is being attacked on a dedicated Facebook page, and there is a campaign to remove her from her leadership of the Media Alliance.

kpfa was created by real human being beleiver to non violence . People who put their own existence in jeopardy by opposing the most popular war like ww2. people like rachel corrie who stood in front of zionist nazi buldozer, people like a chinese young man in peking who stood in a front of a tank , people like rosa park who by sitting down took a stand against the most of the brutal oppression ever existed, people like mlk who took the blank force of racist white hatred whith a bullet in his heart. Who are this fucking concerned listener like being an ass fat listener meant ever anything . Its an insult to the real peopel who put their life on line for a beautifull beleive that hope and freedom justice and may be love will prevail. Concerned listener is so meaningless diminush way of seeing ur own life .kpfa people are not just listener .We are engaged in the fight against fucking oppression and commited to fucking justice . Be a fucking listener concerned listener as much as u want you lame liars but most of us are part of the struggle .So was nadra foster you fake little liars insignifiant well articulated may be but still insignifiant shit.
good -!!! now this group of people totally antagonistic to/ignorant of the mechanisms by which to work for justice can complete the total downfall of the station - then the network - as has been going on for decades, really.
Perhaps the results might worry enough people to find out what work for justice is all about and start working on it.
Actually, I don't expect any of that. Things will just stumble along as the mass of people cannot begin to understand what we're up against - in the world - that dribbles down to organizations that insist they're working for justice. This just represents the go-alongs that undermine the necessary work ... These people are like NGOs - no sense of the world out there, no ability to know, to read, to acknowledge history -
feh! (spit)
On the other side of the coin, the depthless commentary among which the electeds are called rich is typical of the products of our school system, the ignorantifyer par excellence. Those people are NOT rich, just in thrall to The Rich.

I am not sure why this information was leaked from a confidential meeting and then repeated on the air. nevertheless i agree that we need good programming. but not sure what the solution is to the huge budget problems at KPFA . Do you have an answer for that ? cause seems like this is about some people upset about their jobs and just wanting other people at KPFA to get cut. Maybe everyone needs to be cut to part time if that is what it takes to SAVE KPFA.

I am certain the union contract (CWA) was the main if not only factor involved in this round of talks. Who negotiated that contract? Jeserich ally Mark Mericle and other so-called "SaveKPFA" folks.
Seriously, if it had been a "hit list" why on earth would people keep on Mark Mericle who simply reads stories, not all that well while taking out a powerhouse like Aimee Alison? But she came on board fairly recently, while Mericle has seniority. All the cuts are based on seniority except for Jeserich, whose lack of seniority-position is preserved because his show is "syndicated" -- plays on other stations, so falls into a different category.

The union contract is all about seniority, and Mericle is pretty senior.

Or are you saying that somehow if enough listeners say they want to keep this show, the less senior staff such as Lilley will stay and more senior staff such as Mark Mericle WILL go? Suppose there HAVE to be cuts? What should be done? The only reason the board got involved is because YOUR friends in charge at the station have refused to present a budget for months.

This idiotic idea that ANYONE would keep Mark Mericle over anyone else at the station is ludicrous. And you KNOW you couldn't get listeners caring about that!
Mericle negotiated this contract. For god's sake blame him.

I agree that those folks need to be kept on..and I like the fact that you stand up for your people. shows class and loyalty, not something found in the journalism business anymore.

RE: THE Server is Down
Listeners have the right and the privilege of doing whatever they feel necessary, within reason, to reach staff with clearly needed information. Who said ya gotta call it in? Why should they even have HAD to call it in? Why was no notice of explanation posted to explain this problem? In any case, it worked, apparently--- they've gotten someone's attention.
If information comes in by carrier pigeon, what is the difference? Phone calls and callers are often left to twist in the wind of a poorly administrated KPFA. So, quitcher bitchin', be glad people are paying attention, respect listeners' input, kill the condescension, do your job, be grateful you've got one and ...consider thinking outside of the box.
"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
