Gaza was attacked in international waters by the Israeli military as Israel attempted to enforce a naval blockade of Gaza regarded as illegal by the United Nations and much of the world. By the night's end, 9 people on board had been shot and killed by Israeli forces, including one nineteen-year-old American citizen, with many more seriously injured and then kidnapped.
