Independents for Community Radio is the Smart Choice for KPFA
If you still haven't voted, support fiscal responsibility, community activism, diversity across both ethnic, gender and age barriers and a track record of unpaid staff support and broad programming input. Save KPFA/Concerned Listeners is just a stale inside job. Reject it.
Independents for Community Radio (ICR) is an affinity group of listener and KPFA staff candidates committed to progressive radio that is tied to the community. We are creative, uncompromising and realistic about changes in the way people get information today. We are activists and organizers from groups like the Chinese Progressive Association, the Arab-American Union Members Council, The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Media Alliance, AFSAC, Silicon Valley Toxics, and many others; journalists, academics, labor leaders, professionals and Pacifica staffers, both long-term and fairly new.
We believe in community radio. We believe KPFA should generate unique, local hard-hitting journalism right here in the Bay Area. We believe in a collaborative environment that empowers the community to participate in KPFA, creating members that feel like a part of the station and support it like family. We believe in a programming committee that brings together management, unpaid workers, board members and listener-subscribers from the community to make balanced programming decisions. We believe in unpaid staff organizing. We believe KPFA cannot be an effective voice against war and militarism when it calls the police on workers or internally structures itself as a hierarchy pitting compensated workers against uncompensated ones. We believe in using digital technologies to spread our message far and wide and to allow many more voices to use our facility to organize their communities. We believe in fiscal responsibility and holding the station accountable for living within its means in this most challenging of economies, We believe that KPFA must strive to save 5 cents of every listener dollar for a rainy day fund to make sure we survive for another 60 years, instead of blowing through almost a million dollars as the Concerned Listener/Save KPFA-dominated boards did in 2008-2009 with over-optimistic budgets.
KPFA deserves better.
Independents for Community Radio (ICR) is the right choice for KPFA’s board.
