Concerned Listener/Save KPFA'er Jack Kurzweil Suspended from Wellstone Club For Shoving
Yet another incident of intimidation by the Wellstone Demo/Save KPFA/Concerned Listeners crew.
Save KPFA/Concerned Listeners candidate for the KPFA board, Jack Kurzweil (a 2-time candidate, Kurzweil lost his 2009 bid for the board) was just suspended from meetings of the Berkeley Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club after he argued with and then shoved a female member of the club during a vote-counting for WRDC endorsements in local political races.

If that is the case, going to the LSB vote counting for the elections will be even more scary than I thought and it is a good idea to have observers there.
There are already the two Hallinan Brothers (one up for re-election this time around as well) and Dan Siegel (all three Concerned Listener/Save KPFA board members) who advanced on a member of the audience a few month's ago and invited him outside to fight. Of course, there is Conn Hallinan advancing on the board chair this year and threatening her. Warren Mar (another of their pack and on the board) raising a hand to a hit a member of the audience this year at a board meeting.
Between all these violence prone men who are part of Cl/Save/Wellstone groups, is it safe to go to the vote count? If they don't win . . . and let's hope they don't . . . . I hope the station can get some security guards to keep people safe!

The Al Capone style professionalism of the "community" radio station.

To me, this isn't about scary in the immediate physical sense. Fortunately, Phelps doesn't take Siegel up on the challenge.
Kurzweil seems to be a nice person who may have lost his temper in a fit of true believer-hood. (I can't say the same about Dan Siegel, who does not seem to me to be a very nice anything). Kurzweil and others in many ways just don't get that the alternative to an elected board with members who think for themselves at KPFA is ultimately a VERY scary machine. Some of these people have been convinced by the likes of Larry Bensky that some of these stars of radio can do almost no wrong, and that opening the gates or at least slightly enlarging the circle of gatekeepers will mean such unwashed masses stinkiness that any amount of concerted wall-building against that is worth it.
There IS a need for listener oversight. For board members NOT to simply "trust" Brian Edwarts-Tiekert for accurate financial information, no matter how unbelievably effective he is at spinning his case. He is not a disinterested party. You can see Matthew Hallinan admitting he relied on Edwards-Tiekert for that in the candidate forum filmed in San Francisco (up at pacificaelections2010.org). The station is completely broke after 2 terms of Edwards-Tiekert's selective doling out of financial info (as treasurer and deep KPFA insider) to his fellow board members. Edwards-Tiekert used to be a very good investigative reporter. The world needs those. As a devious intrigue-ridden pretend board member, he, Siegel, et al are extremely scary and dangerous.

I strongly oppose the so called '' Concerned Listeners' . I am very pissed off by their use of the Historic name ''Save KPFA ''. But as one post pointed out they really don't present any physical danger . Conn Hallinan must be in his late 60's and Matthew '' Dynamite '' Hallinan probably is at least 70 ! So serious ''thugs '' they are not !
Siegel's challenge to Phelps to '' Step Outside '' looks more like silly late middle aged machismo than anything else .
All this being said however IF they could recruit (or have loaned to them from some org. ) some real thugs I doubt if they would hestiate to do so . But unlike their ''Justice and Unity '' voting partners (WBAI-NYC ) i think they are simply unable to do that .
