People's Park Committee Briefing

by Mr Brief
This is an unofficial briefing of Monday's People's Park Advisory Meeting.
1 - By decree of the University (Birgeneau), the People's Park Advisory Committee now only meets every third month of the school year, instead of every month of the school year. The next meeting is in December. These meetings were important for public comment regarding the park, but now members of the public can only face the committee a few times a year.

2 - By decree of the University, funding for People's Park repairs and renovations has been frozen. The broken water fountain will not be replaced. There is no money to improve the children's/family area. (Garbage pickup and restroom clean-up will continue.)

3 - By decree of the University, more trees on the west-end of the Park be removed this fall. Plans for spring have net yet been revealed to the public.

4 - By decree of the University, all home game football pep-rallies will now be held in People's Park. The Cal Bears football rallies will start two hours long, starting 2 hours before kick off. Cal Berkeley wants their land back.

What are the plans for dealing with the dog-abusers in People's Park? Since DIY efforts to police poor treatments of animals have failed, perhaps it is time for the government to step in?

I usually don't like relying on government, but something needs to be done!

Regardless of the idiotic politics in Berkeley, the southeast corner of People's Park will continue to be a space for chanting, rituals, and the presence of traditional tantrik lifestyles. The corner of the park where I helped put in the century plants in the summer of 1972, named it Shiva's Corner when I returned from India in the fall of 1994, and saw the street people camped there enjoying ganja and drinking wine, fully decked out in their hemp clothing. Chanting of Kali mantrams and the fragrance of Nag Champa incense, dancers wearing OM t-shirts, the Krishna devotees serving free prasadam lunches, and of course the nearby Berkeley Vedanta Society (whose guru Sri Ramakrishna was chief priest of the Kali temple in Dakshineshwar in Bengal in India in the late 1880s) which was dedicated on Durga puja in 1939 by Swami Ashokananda...all of this contributes to the integrity of Shiva's Corner!
