New Contact Info for Santa Cruz PeaceCamp 2010

by Robert Norse
The Sleep-Out and Protest against the City's Sleeping Ban at the County Government Building is now going into its 14th night. Folks are invited to bring food and blankets and join them, or offer other forms of encouragement and support.
So far no citations have been given there. The average number of folks sleeping there each night is about 20. The portapotty there continues to be the only open night-time bathroom in the Santa Cruz downtown area. The Camp is now a 24-hour protest and is seeking to do greater outreach.
Activist and sometime sidewalk sleeper Becky Johnson has set up an informational website at http://www.peacecamp2010.blogspot.com/ following actions at the Peace Camp.

Petition to End the Sleeping Ban -

We, the undersigned, urge Santa Cruz City Council to immediately end the City's anti-homeless Sleeping and Blanket Bans in Santa Cruz (MC 6.36.010a and MC 6.36.010b).

There is no available emergency walk-in shelter for homeless people until mid-November.
New oppressive laws before City Council will now make Sleeping tickets a jailing offense.

To restore human rights to poor and homeless people, to avoid costly lawsuits, and to do the right thing, we ask Santa Cruz to join other major California cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, Richmond, & Laguna Beach. In these cities, nighttime sleeping outside is no longer a crime.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
