Dartmouth lab charged with 12 federal violations in 5 months; Live animal found in carcass freezer
HANOVER, NH – Recently obtained federal reports reveal major violations of the Animal Welfare Act within the labs of Dartmouth College, according to the national research watchdog group SAEN.
The 12 violations amassed by Dartmouth in just 5 months include unqualified personnel, inadequate veterinary care, inadequate environmental enhancement for primates, improper sanitation, and inadequate monitoring of experiments by Dartmouth’s IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee).
According to government reports, an October 2009 inspection cited a Dartmouth researcher for being unaware of the correct anesthetics and euthanasia drugs for his/her own protocol. Another incident involved improperly performed euthanasia, which resulted in a living hamster being placed in a carcass freezer.
Other violations involve primates that were underfed (losing over 15% of their body weight) or were exhibiting psychologically abnormal behavior.
“Negligence at Dartmouth placed a living hamster in a freezer” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “This facility should face serious consequences, but the USDA is allowing them to get away with murder,” he said.
“If Dartmouth researchers don’t even know which drugs are used in their own protocols, then something is seriously wrong. How can any of the research results from this facility be given any credence whatsoever,” said Budkie.
