War funding continues, thanks to Nancy Pelosi and Democratic "leadership"

by Janet Weil (janet.weil13 [at] gmail.com)
The war funding "supplemental" bill came up for a vote today. Instead of having a clear up or down vote on whether the members of the House of Representatives wanted to fund more war and militarism in Afghanistan, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who nominally "represents" San Francisco, cooked up a "rule" that said, if only one of the four amendments to the war funding passes, the whole bill passes automatically. That way the supposedly "antiwar" Democrats would not have to cast a vote directly on the war funding. They went for it! All but 38 Democratic reps voted YES on the "rule" -- really, the sneaky disguise of a yes vote for more war.
For full analysis of this deceitful maneuver, please click on the link to David Swanson's analysis below. Watching Congresswoman Barbara Lee speak powerfully in favor of her "fund the safe and orderly withdrawal" amendment when she had voted "yes" on so-called "Self-Executing Rule" was a particular disappointment.

Thirty-eight Democrats voted NO on this "blink and you missed it" rule. They include John Conyers, who refused to start impeachment proceedings as chair of the House Judiciary Committee in 2007, but who has started an "Out of Afghanistan" caucus. Others who voted NO include: the stalwart Dennis Kucinich, BOTH reps from Maine where not co-incidentally a strong "Bring Our War Dollars Home" campaign has been going on for months, and Alan Grayson of "The War Is Making You Poor" fame -- click here to see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0_TtYQEDTo

From the Capitol Hill paper "The Hill" comes this snapshot of arm-twisting by Lady Nancy of Pacific Heights:
"Party leaders were forced to hold open the vote for several minutes, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) could be seen huddling with Reps. Steve Cohen (Tenn.) and Paul Kanjorski (Penn.), the last Democratic holdouts."

But sadly for the Bay Area congressional delegation, stereotyped as oh-so-liberal (including handmaiden to warmakers Pelosi), NOT ONE SINGLE REPRESENTATIVE from the city by the Bay or its suburbs voted against the rule, that was in fact the only vote for $33 BILLION more for continuing murder and mayhem in Afghanistan. Not Woolsey. Not Stark. Not George Miller, who so vehemently condemned "the incredible price" in human lives and money that US citizens are paying for war during the meaningless debate on Lee's amendment. Not Garamendi the rookie who proudly proclaimed himself "antiwar" when he was elected to replace Tauscher in a special election in November 2009. Not Speier, not McNerney the Silent, not Lofgren, not Honda, not Eshoo. Madam Speaker kept a firm grip on "her" colleagues.

The time to show up at their offices is now.
