Ishmael Reed on KPFA: "The last thing Oakland needs is a riot".

by contrarian response
"The last thing Oakland needs is a riot" Ishmael Reed on KPFA's morning show 6/28/10.
I've lived in Oakland flatlands for 20 years and I agree with Reed the last thing Oakland needs a riot.

Here is a wide ranging interview with long time anti-racist and author Ishmael Reed:

Yes, what happened to Oscar Grant was injustice and there is a good chance that Mehesrle will get off but tearing up Oakland doesn't take us anywhere positive. The police will be very ready for the antic of professional militants. I urge the protesters to think out of their very predictable box and do something original and nonviolent.

surround all police stations anywhere in the entire world peacefully . do not leave until the racist court system is abolished. draw attention to planet earth!
...someone who hasnt been oppressed for say, 400 years. Its easy to rationalize and remain calm when you're not getting beat up by cops and locked out of jobs and pushed into the projects and victim to daily 'new wave' racism gently inserted in the subtle mouths of media icons. A lot of white people told black people to calm down in 1965 & 1968 too. Especially after that Martin Luther King character got shot.

People are angry. They have a good reason to be angry.

MLK was against rioting. So were the black panthers. Bobby Seale, founder of the panthers was on the radio arguing against rioting over the killing of Oscar Grant. Ishmael Reed, a black writer who'se been fighting racism for 5 or 6 decades also opposes fucking up Oakland. If you were actually in touch with Oakland's black community you would know-- they are not for tearing up Oakland.

The cops are gonna be prepared this time for your predictable antics. They aint gonna let you smash up (black) mom and pop businesses or random working class people's cars. Breaking Burger kings windows doesn't do anything either.

So perhaps if you drop your silly ass, pc college, 400 years of oppression rhetoric, and pull your head out of your ass maybe you might find something constructive to do.

by no?
of course MLK was against rioting but a funny thing happened after he was shot on April 4th, 1968: lots of riots. and on April 11, the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was passed. Go figure!

The fact is riots are not the best TACTICALLY, but they are more than justified and they can help. People are angry and oppressed. And when you side with the media and politicians AGAINST rioters (i.e. your fellow oppressed brothers and sisters) you give help to produce the green light for 'retaliation'- i.e. severe laws and prosecution and jail time for people. Conservative backlash is so much easier with people like you spreading those opinions around.

Some kind of riot is going to happen and it may not be well-focused on the proper targets. But the "last thing" Oakland needs is order, complacency, & apathy....things that have kept the status quo Jim Crow setup in place. Whatever works against that is a GOOD THING, whether or not property-owning cuddly-bear idealists want it. Pie in the Sky talk, preaching "non-violence" to a people that are constant victims of violence EVERY DAY only helps to make that people the enemy & the target.

Hell, you might as well sign up for increasing gang injunctions while you're at it. Y'know, to keep you're property clean, safe, and peaceful for Oakland gentrification.

tf people hadn't stood up in Oakland after the Oscar Grant murder then Mehserle simply would have got away with it.

I didn't hear the morning show's interview with Ishmael Reed, but the claim that "The last thing Oakland needs is a riot" strikes me as absurd.
