End the Blockade of Gaza

by Mike Rhodes (editor [at] fresnoalliance.com)
Peace Fresno held a demonstration today (Friday, June 4) to protest the killing of peace activists on the Marvi Marmara by Israeli military personnel. About 50 people attended the demo at Shaw and Blackstone in Fresno. Some of those at the event were counter-protestors who mixed their signs of support for Israel with the Peace Fresno signs condemning the killing of peace activists who were attempting to break the blockade of Gaza.

This is from the Peace Fresno Press Release, announcing today's event:

Peace Fresno Demonstration to Condemn Killing of Peace Activists on the Mavi Marmara by Israeli Military

On Friday June 4th, members and supporters of PEACE FRESNO will protest the recent brutal attack by the Israeli military on the Freedom Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. Protest will be held from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Peace Corner (Blackstone & Shaw Ave.) We are disappointed in our country's weak response to this violent act.

People from over forty countries, including the United States, were carrying food, medical supplies and children's toys to the people of Gaza, who have suffered for years under a cruel and illegal Israeli blockade. For too many years, the Israeli government has violated international law against the Palestinian people. Military and economic violence is and has been Israel's policy towards Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Peace Fresno asks that President Obama be the change he promised, utilizing his position to advance the cause of peace by ordering the U.S. State Department conduct an immediate, independent investigation of the killings on the Mavi Marmara We also ask the United States Congress and the United Nations to conduct investigations. Furthermore, we ask that President Obama immediately suspend all military and financial aid to Israel until the findings of this investigation are complete. We demand the end of siege of Gaza by Israel. We ask Obama to work for peace in the Middle East and to bring our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Who: Peace Fresno and friends

What: Demonstration to condemn killings by Israeli military aboard the Mavi Marmara, to call on President Obama to order an immediate, independent investigation of the incident and to bring our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan
