Don't think Israel and its supporters have a genocidal program? just look at their signs

by Felix Barrett (revolution.sfbureau [at] gmail.com)
Anyone who doesn't think that Israel and its supporters have a genocidal program toward the Palestinian people should check out the signs these people carried at the demonstration on 6-1-2010 in front of the Israeli Consulate. One sign proudly displayed throughout their small counter-protest read "Until Gaza Is Destroyed the Job Is Not Done" The word destroyed is in read letters for emphasis. What other explanation is there than these people want the destruction of an entire territory where more than one million Palestinians live? Remember this isn't something they whisper to themselves but this is what they proudly proclaim for the whole world to see!

Another sign said "Ship of Fools" and another said "Terrorist Flotilla." This is how these people describe the group of ships carrying some 700 activists from 40 countries were , including elected officials, former diplomats, aid workers and activists, a Nobel laureate, news correspondents and independent journalists. The flotilla was carrying 10,000 tons concrete, toys, workbooks, chocolate, pasta and substantial medical supplies.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza -- which the flotilla was attempt to alleviate -- is a genocidal effort enforced by an Israeli blockade and backed by US support for Israel. Mass unemployment, extreme poverty, food insecurity and food price rises caused by shortages left four out of five Gazans dependent on humanitarian aid. According to a recent World Health Organization (WHO) report over 10 percent of children in Gaza are suffering from malnutrition. Israel's 2008-2009 invasion damaged 15 of 27 hospitals in Gaza and damaged or destroyed 43 of its 110 primary health care facilities, none of which have been repaired or rebuilt because of the construction materials ban. Some 15-20 percent of essential medicines are commonly out of stock. And Israel's sadistic lockdown means that the people in Gaza are not allowed to leave and are totally cut off from family and friends outside.

Many more people need to oppose the attack by Israel on the humanitarian workers and its whole genocidal campaign. In these times its not enough to shake your head and move on. Silence = Complicity. To fail to oppose acts like these is similar to those who sat silent when another historic crime was committed. If you say never again to the holocaust then you must also actively oppose the same kind of genocidal acts being committed by Israel (and backed by the United States government.
