Sometimes really big things happen in the world that make millions of people sit up and pay attention. Recently, in the space of four days, two major events captured headlines and set off huge discussion and debate among millions of people. The horrific oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and Arizona ’s SB 1070 anti-immigrant law have outraged and awakened many people. And there is a need to build determined mass struggle around both of these outrages.
And both of these events point to how the system has no real solution to these pressing outrages - but the revolution does. Things don’t have to be this way - and a much better world is possible.
Mini crises like these have everything to do with the movement for revolution we are building. You never know in advance when outrages of the system will become flashpoints of a new level of struggle and consciousness among the people. Revolutionaries need to jump into these crises, fight against these burning crimes of the system, and the RCP’s campaign to spread the word about the "Revolution we need and the leadership we have" has to reverberate into and then amplify back out of these major crises now racking society.
This is a crucial part of how we are building a movement for revolution - working to bring a revolutionary people into being, with a backbone of those who have no faith in the system and are devoting their lives to resisting oppression and building up for the time when we can get rid of the cause of all this oppression. We have to be "hastening, while awaiting" the emergence of a full revolutionary crisis when the legitimacy of the system is stripped away, and millions are actively seeking, and willing to put their lives on the line, for a whole different world. We need to actively influence public opinion and organize people to both hasten the emergence of such a situation, shape the character and ground on which such a crisis would be struggled out to resolution, and prepare to take advantage of such a situation to make revolution.
