La Peña's 35 Anniversary Gala Concert
Grupo Raiz
Saturday May 15, 2010. $20 adv. $25 dr. - 8pm
At La Peña, 3105 Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley, California
With their vast Latin American and world music repertoire, Grupo Raiz returns to the stage where they were born 30 years ago to celebrate La Peña's 35th anniversary. They will pay a musical tribute to the main voices of the Nueva Cancion and celebrate with the sounds of strings and winds the legacy of the Bay Area solidarity movement.
Grupo Raiz performed regularly at La Peña and toured nationally and internationally during the 1980s. The group reunites on La Peña's stage to perform in celebration of La Peña's 35th anniversary as well as to be inducted into La Peña's Hall of Fame.
The La Peña Hall of Fame is an area within our center that displays names of cultural workers and activists whose work has fulfilled La Peña's mission of promoting peace, social justice and cultural understanding through the arts, education and community action.
Because of its contributions to La Pena's mission, promotion of the Latin American Nueva Cancion Movement and its repertoire of songs for peace and International solidarity, La Peña is proud to recognize & induct into our Hall of Fame Grupo Raiz.
The sextet’s name will be engraved next to Hugo Brenni, a La Peña founder; Victor Jara, Chilean singer/songwriter who sang truth to power and paid for it with his life; Orlando Letelier, Chilean Ambassador to the U.S. during the Allende administration; Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the U.F.W and the Dolores Huerta Foundation, and Yuri Kochiyama, community activist.
We strongly recommend buying tix in advance
