T4CW 4.19.10: The Enduring Legacy of Howard Zinn: "The People Speak" at Reel Work
The Teachers spoke with two organizers of the Reel Work Labor Day Film Festival, already in progress, along with Lisa Smithline, who worked on "The People Speak," Howard Zinn's final production. We talked about the film, Zinn's work, and central role to the work of Educators and Workers in addition to Historians and political activists [MP3, mono, 46:57].
Jeffrey and Tina give some history of the Reel Work May Day Labor Film Festival (in its ninth year), and discuss its growth over the region. This year there are events in Salinas, San Jose, Watsonville, and Santa Cruz as well as CSUMB, Cabrillo, and UCSC.
Lisa talks about The People Speak (Howard Zinn & Tony Sacco, 2010, 110 min), which will be shown at 7 PM on Wednesday, April 28 - Workers Memorial Day, at the Del Mar.
"Stories of ordinary people making history, represented in dramatic readings by film and music stars woven together with historical footage and music." http://www.thepeoplespeak.com/
And being Maestr@s, we also talked about the lesson plans and clips available for teachers and students, and Zinn's relevance and accessibility to educators everywhere.
