T4CW 4.5.10: Hollister Educator & Poet Joe Navarro
The Teachers spoke with Hollister Educator & Poet Joe Navarro about his blog "Education Is A Right," his 1st graders, his poetry, and his history. An educator since 1994, he's also been an expelled/drop-out, a factory worker, a union leader, an author and poet, and a father. He filled us in on local struggles in Hollister.
Listen now:
"Joe Navarro is a literary vato loco, teacher, student and community activist," according to his bio on the Freedom Road Socialist Organization website. He's also a contributor to "The Cost of Privilege: Taking On the System of White Supremacy and Racism" and author of "Ambidextrous (In Two Languages)." Listen to the MP3 to hear about what politicized him, and the non-traditional road he took to find his way back to the classroom to teach. Towards the end we get into local struggles in Hollister, like the need for, history of, and struggles over Bilingual Education, and the problems with "zero-tolerance" policies.
