Governor Candidate Stewart Alexander Charge Poizner and Brown with Cover-up

by Richard Perry
While Steve Poizner is calling for conflict of interest with Jerry Brown, he was personally presented with evidence of insurance company and employer fraud by injured worker Joe Dow and Candidate for Insurance Commissioner Dina Padilla but refused to properly investigate and prosecute for insurance violations.

On Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle released a story stating that “The Office of state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, a Republican running for governor, has taken the lead in pursuing investigations into the practices of Mercury Insurance Group, which state investigators allege has engaged in illegal practices for years while ignoring state warnings to stop.”

Spokespersons for Steve Poizner have alleged that Attorney General Jerry Brown neglected to investigate Mercury Insurance due to election year politics; the allegation was flatly denied by the spokesperson representing Jerry Brown’s campaign committee.

Stewart Alexander, a PFP Candidate for California Governor, says Poizner and Brown share the blame and chose to play election year politics which resulted in a public cover-up into the investigation of Mercy Insurance. Mercury Insurance is being investigated for alleged discrimination, illegal practices and for overcharging. Mercury Insurance insures 1 out of 10 California drivers.

Stewart Alexander says Steve Poizner’s timing is highly suspicious and appears to be a desperate political maneuver in his campaign to become governor considering he is trailing Republican front-runner Meg Whitman by double digits in the latest polls. Alexander says “Jerry Brown may have cut Mercury Insurance some slack and chose not to investigate one of his campaign donors.” Steve Poizner is not relying on corporate donors, and like billionaire Meg Whitman, Poizner is a billionaire and has been using his own funds to finance his campaign to become governor.

Poizner’s charge regarding Jerry Brown being silent into the investigation of Mercury Insurance raise more concerns about the illegal phone recordings that were taking place in the attorney general’s office. In October, it was discovered that Jerry Brown’s communications director, Scott Gerber, had been secretly recording phone conversations with reporters which is a violation of California law. When Mr. Gerber was questioned about the recordings, he acknowledged taping a phone interview with a San Francisco Chronicle reporter and admitted taping other reporters without their knowledge or permission. The matter was eventually swept under the rug.

As insurance commissioner, Steve Poizner has allowed insurance representatives such as William Zachry, who was the chair of the Fraud Assessment Commission, to do oversight of the workers comp industry even though Zachry and other members represented self insured employers and insurance companies. Dina Padilla has questioned, “Is this any way to run the Insurance Department by having the foxes guarding the chickens?”

Six months later, Alexander says the Mercury Insurance investigation is another political cover-up; “and this time, Steve Poizner shared in the cover-up.”
