Film screenings of "Shellmound" by Andres Cediel & excerpt from "Free Land" by Ariel Luckey followed by discussion Guest Speaker, Corrina Gould (Chochenyo Ohlone). As "Future/Tense" celebrates the ecology and geographic diversity of Alameda, we recognize that Shellmounds exist in the landscape of our city. The first people of Alameda, the Chochenyo Ohlone, are alive today and we live on their sacred sites. Their Shellmounds not only reflect the past of the land we live on, but also our present and future. Join us for film viewing, discussion and reflection. "Shellmound," a 29-minute documentary by Oakland filmmaker Andres Cediel, examines issues surrounding commercial development of a Native burial ground in Emeryville, CA . From 1997-2002, a regional shopping center in Emeryville was constructed on an Ohlone cemetary. Hundreds of bodies were uncovered by construction workers. This movie provides viewpoints from Native Americans, the developer, the City of Emeryville and archaeologists. It ends with footage from an annual Shellmound Peace Walk in the Bay Area that took place from 2004-2007.
"Free Land" is a hip hop theater solo show written and performed by Ariel Luckey. The show follows a young white man’s search for his family roots as it takes him from the streets of Oakland to the prairies of Wyoming. "Free Land" challenges us all to take a look at the truth buried in the land beneath our feet, as we witness the contradictions in Ariel's life and his search for the possibility of justice and reconciliation. A 20-minute excerpt from "Free Land" focusing on the history of land in the East Bay, including the Emeryville Shellmound, will be screened.
