Fresh from the Scientist to You

Monday evening, April 19th, at 7 pm, Dr. Friedlander will discuss information from a recent 2010 presentation by Dr. Anna Cuervo, PhD, (Albert Einstein Medical School, NY) on her study of lysomes that recycle cell waste. This study involved evaluation of the individual's autophagy. When the human or animal body processes involved in autophagy (clean-up on the cellular level) diminishes or fails we will soon notice signs of glycation, immune suppression, inflammation and general aging at the cellular level. Tumors may develop.

In her original work, published in Nature Medicine in 2008, Dr. Cuervo looked at liver cells and was indeed able to rejuvenate the liver cells both in appearance and function.
Does maintaining efficient protein clearance in liver cells of an older animal translate into better functioning for the liver as a whole? is one question Dr. Cuervo addressed in her breakthrough research.

As we can easily imagine, a better functioning liver as we age could pay off in better and quicker healing and tissue repair, better clearing of metabolites of drugs and alcohol from our bodies, and even in better digestion.
The answer to the question of better global liver function was a resounding Yes, cleaning the cells enabled the liver to perform as a liver that was half as old.

At an east coast conference, Dr. Cuervo recently made updates 2010 (to the above mentioned 2008 research). Dr. Friedlander will give us these updates as well as discuss work at University of Washington School of Medicine on other anti-aging methods that have benefits for cancer prevention and therapy.
