The VIOLENCE must stop and the HEALING must begin in the Southeast Sector.
Here is a letter from the son of Mr. Huan Chen, an innocent man aged 83 years who was jumped by some misguided youth and beaten. We must NOT tolerate such behavior at all. Please listen to the words of the son of the man - who was a victim, a good man - his life must UNITE us to fight for justice, fair play, and unity.
There have been some reports in the newspapers but we have NOT heard from the loved ones and especially the family of Mr. Huan Chen who died weeks after he was assaulted at the Oakdale Third Street Light rail station in January.
The death of Mr. Huan Chen must NOT be in vain. We all must learn from his death and more from his life. The man was a very good man, well educated, and lived a exemplary life.
The Municipal Transportation Authority (MTA) that has control of the Light Rail - Mr. Nathaniel Ford is doing a poor job. This is NOT the first time - innocent people have been attacked on the Light Rail and on the MUNI buses. We have NOT heard Nathaniel Ford apologize - and this is NOT business as usual. It will NOT be - this time around.
While the MTA continues to raise our fares and continues to give us very poor service, the worst ever in decades. Surely, of importance is the SAFETY of the passengers on MUNI and the Light Rail. The San Francisco Transportation Authority, the MTA, the Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom - just cannot deliver. They talk the talk but cannot walk the walk.
The graffiti continues to worsen.
Loud mouth youth continue to intimidate innocent passengers.
Hundreds continue to enter through the back door and DO NOT pay their fares.
MTA has allowed this to happen for years - some people are in the habit of NOT paying their fares and think they can do anything and everything - to avoid and pay their fare share and pay their fare.
Notices must be placed that all people should have a fare and that unruly behavior will NOT be accepted on any jurisdiction that MUNI and the MTA have control over.
I have seen people spit on the MUNI drivers.
I have seen passengers assaulted.
I have seen terrible things happen on the buses and Light Rail - but it is even worse on some stations. The worst being the Oakdale Station in the Bayview and the surrounding area that is NOT safe.

It really saddens me to hear or see what our people are going through. The violence has been around for centuries, in fact since the beginning of time, yet the extend of this violence in this time and age is ridiculous. How can anyone sit there and pick on an elderly and cause him/her harm and death? It makes no sense at all. Where are the morals and manners and respect that we were taught? Why if we are suffering, can you make some one else suffer worse? I hope and pray that there will be justice for the sake of Mr. Huan Chen and his family. I hope and pray that God will stand by them at this time and that the individuals may suffer for what they have done. The only way of redemption right now for those who have done this is to turn themselves in, although it may never happen, God will show them no mercy. My family and I send our most deepest sympathies and will pray that there be some closure for the family.
I think it's time the entire asian community unite and get rid of Nathaniel Ford from running MUNI. We need to be represented in more roles within San Francisco politics. This is just outrageous that such hate crimes can be committed against asians without nary a word from politicians and city officials about it being hate crimes. It's been happening for too long and I think it's time we wake up and start getting political and wielding power to invoke change.
