UC's 15,000 clerical workers deserve effective union representation



THE NEW ALLIANCE OF CLERICAL EMPLOYEES-CWA is a new union for clerical and allied services employees at the University of California systemwide. We are made up of your coworkers at each UC campus, medical center and lab. We invite you to join us by filling out an authorization card today.

Under the current union, UC's clericals have been stuck in bargaining for 2 years with no end in sight. Reclassifications have been blocked, layoffs are occurring across the UC system, our health and retirement benefits are under threat, and many of us feel powerless. It doesn't have to be this way.

Clerical employees at UC deserve better wages and benefits, which we can win, even in this time of budget difficulties. This spring, thousands of our UC coworkers represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) won improved contract protections and substantial raises - up to 14.5% over the next 3 years, as a combination of cost-of-living and step increases. We need the same ability to defend and expand the rights of UC's clerical employees.

PROGRESS LIKE THIS REQUIRES A UNION WITH EXPERIENCE, INTELLIGENCE, AND A STRATEGIC VISION. Union members need support and training to be effective, including regular communications and open discussion. We need a smart program of outreach to legislators, community supporters, and the media, and we need to maximize our strength by building solidarity with other UC unions.

As a group of rank-and-file members with decades of UC organizing experience, we formed NACE-CWA to preserve the tradition of democratic union activism among clerical employees. An informed membership, regular elections, accountability and transparency will ensure that members can and do run the union.
