WORLD CAN'T WAIT speaker Stephanie Tang addresses March 20 rally

by Curt Wechsler (sf [at] worldcantwait.org)
Racist bigots with the "Tea Party Movement" aren't the only ones in the streets, as we proved Saturday with coast to coast protests against the wars and torture the U.S. is still carrying out.
What we need - what only we can do - is make a change in what people in this country will accept being done in our names. If people have gotten confused about whether the Iraq war is over, tell them, no - it's becoming a permanent occupation!

The WE ARE NOT YOUR SOLDIERS tour is a concrete step to doing just this: changing what people in this country will accept. Help Students Say No to Recruiters!:

Sisters and brothers: 7 years since Shock and Awe -- 14 months since "Change you can believe in" - one outrage after another, what terrible direction do we see?
Obama's expansion of the war is NOT saving the lives of the Afghan people. It's killing them.

Sisters and brothers: 7 years since Shock and Awe -- 14 months since "Change you can believe in" - one outrage after another, what terrible direction do we see?
Obama's expansion of the war is NOT saving the lives of the Afghan people. It's killing them.
American secret operations and unmanned drones -- in 5 countries -- are not only illegal, unjust and immoral, but an outrage against all of humanity.
Obama refuses to let over 600 Bagram detainees be ID'd, or have habeas rights, or lawyers to challenge their detention -- all this puts the lie to his claim that "We Do Not Torture."
Now Obama defends Bush/Cheney's torture lawyers and war crimes in the name of executive privilege -- Now private contractors are running black ops outside the chain of command -- NowObama claims the right to assassinate US citizens.
Yes, the Right wing IS breathing down Obama's neck, attacking his presidential legitimacy because he's Black. The media gives more time to one racist Tea Party convention than we've ever gotten for anti war marches. The neo-cons have the initiative, and the only promise Obama has kept is his promise to spread the illegitimate occupation of Afghanistan.
But we should NOT get played into accepting these terms, NOR into games to so-called "save" Obama, the new war president. Changing the face in the White House only made the poison go down easier. As for Congress? Get real, stop looking there for solutions. What we need, and what only WE can do, is a change in what people in this country will accept being done in our names.
Some people are confused, think the Iraq war is over. NO! It's becoming permanent occupation!
Some are confused: Dick Cheney and John Yoo say we need torture to keep Americans safe. NO! Torture and aggressive war are NEVER acceptable.

And kids are joining the military because fighting for Obama sounds better than fighting for Bush. NO! Don't join up to be sent to commit war crimes in illegal occupations for empire!
What CAN you do? Hook up with "We Are Not Your Soldiers Tour" to bring vets into schools, to give students a life-and-death understanding of the reality of this war -- to help them resist the recruiters. If you want to stop the war, let's start at your school. Come find us at http://www.wearenotyoursoldiers.org/.

Only we can reverse this dynamic. The future is unwritten. Which one we get is up to us. The world STILL can't wait!
