John Zerzan criticizes anticiv proponents

by franzen
Both John Zerzan and Lierre Keith spoke at the Anarchist book fair on the weekend of 3.12.2010. Zerzan is best described as a primitivist, while Keith and one of her publishers, Derrick Jensen, hold a similar but more moderate perspective that is sometimes called anticiv, which is a form of primitivism. The core concept is that once societies such as mesopotamians, chinese, and aztecs adopted entirely based on the grains wheat, rice and corn, then the legal system of property rights, monarchy/slavery, and overpopulation is inevitable. Zerzan has previously criticized Jensen on various counts, mostly for not making pure and consistent enough personal choices in life.
Hopefully not drumming up the soap opera too much here: in Zerzan's first radio show out of Eugene after the book fair, Zerzan criticizes Lierre Keith for both bringing a security assistant to her evening book talk, and for filing a police report after the first talk. Along with his collaborator Kevin, he questions whether there was cayenne pepper in the pie, and they also make a point of criticizing the Portland based 'rewilding' enthusiast Urban Scout or Peter Bower.

Beth from Kansas swears there was so much cayenne that the organizers had to warn people to stand away from the microphone. She then goes on to say this was smeared in her (Lierre's) eyes. I've seen the video and a pie was tossed in her direction by someone running past. Nothing was smeared in her eyes.

After not only meeting John Zerzan this weekend and hearing this, i have much respect for this man

Last fall, the beginning of a construction project began which has only so far destroyed a few non-native trees. However, this spring will bring the continuation of the project which will continue to effectively destroy and degrade this ancient shellmound. A small group of native peoples and their supporters have been protesting this desecreation but continue to seek supporters and need your help!

Clearly Zerzan and Tucker are more focused on being Pure Anarchists (TM) than on actually getting shit done. They would rather spend their time criticizing their closest allies rather focusing on their common enemies. What good is a movement that is more threatened by itself than by say, corporations and their governments? When are people going to stop acting like children and actually work to get something good accomplished?

I saw it too. after reading your post I watched it again.
I disagree.
The first pie was slammed onto the top of her head.
The 2nd pie hit her in the face, but with less force.
The 3rd pie barely it her at all.

That first pie hit her hard from what I can tell.

The word you want about John Zerzan is "fool", not tool. anybody who believes that we can go back to time of hunter-gather is a fool.

That 'go back to' phrase is usually used to misdirect.
We cannot go back to anything.
We can go forward into something though.

When you dive under water do you think, "Well, I can never go back to breathing air"?
No, you think you will "return" to breathing air.

Regarding Zerzan, I listened to part of his latest radio show last night.
He was far more open, kind and relaxed than I expected based on what some people posted on this site.
