Solidarity Picket with Stricking Mexican Electrical Workers!

Date:
Tuesday, March 16, 2010
Time:
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Event Type:
Protest
Organizer/Author:

Location Details:
Sindicato Méxicano de Electricistas (SME, Mexican Union of Electrical Workers) will take place at the Mexican Consulate in San Francisco, 532 Folsom Street (between 1st and 2nd Streets)

The protest is in solidarity with the national political strike called by the SME union in Mexico. Electrical workers of the government-owned utility Luz y Fuego del Centro were fired last November by the administration of President Felipe Calderón and replaced by nonunion contract workers. As part of the effort to regain their jobs and garner the support of other unions and workers, SME and their supporters plan to block access to all of the utility’s facilities.

In the United States, support for the SME workers is increasing. Laid-off SME members have toured several U.S. cities to inform labor and social justice activists of the Mexican government’s attacks on their union and livelihood. Tuesday’s solidarity rally continues that cross-border support.

The demonstration has been endorsed by the Freedom Socialist Party, the Bay Area Latin America Solidarity Coalition, Radical Women/Mujeres Radicales, and other groups and individuals. For more information, contact Toni Mendicino, 415-730-2917 or Robert Price, 415-412-4183.
