bolon ajaw, mitziton, montes azules: alto a la represion!
stop police/military/paramilitary repression of zapatista communities in chiapas! stencil in solidarity with compañer@s zapatistas sweeps san francisco. these images are from the sidewalk in front of the mexican consulate, 532 folsom st. expect more soon!
there are three very urgent things happening in chiapas right now. one of them is the removal/desalojo of two communities in montes azules, one of them zapatista, in a very brutal way but with the presence of pro-government media to frame it as an ecologically-driven action to favor massive ecotourism development projects. several other communities are slated for removal too, so the problem is extremely urgent.
the other important issue is what's happening in bolon ajaw/agua azul. there was an armed attack by OPDDIC members to zapatista bases of support at bolon ajaw which large media has really taken on with front-page stories about how zapatistas attacked "peaceful" peasants from agua azul who were only toiling their lands. this is also a very important story because it of course also has to do with tourism development projects, this time concerning agua azul and the san cristóbal-palenque developments.
finally, there are the problems that the community of mitzitón is facing (they're adherents to la otra) from paramilitary harassment from ejército de dios, an evangelical-based, heavily armed paramilitary organization. that too has to do with tourism, since mitzitón is one of the communities resisting the construction of the san cristóbal-palenque highway.
