Bay Area independent journalists to cover demonstrations at 2010 Olympic games
Three Bay Area independent journalists are traveling up to Vancouver for the first week of the Olympic games to cover the demonstrations and will be blogging daily about their experiences.
The mobilization against the games has been going on for more than 4 years now and is about to culminate in the demonstrations coinciding with the opening ceremonies. Planned activities include marches, conferences, rallies and days of autonomous direct action. The demonstrations against the games have in a large part manifested as a result of the mistreatment of homeless people in the city of Vancouver, the seizing of unceded native lands for use in the games, the logging of some of British Columbia's forests for new roads for the games, as well as a host of other issues. Say hello to the Raging Grannies up there!
Press rel: The Canadian border patrol prevented Indy videographer Wes from going to document the Olympics protests - then those fine civil servants in US Dept of Homeland Security messed with him too. The goons are really determined to wreck that Olympic spirit...

Martin Macias, Jr., a credentialed freelance journalist who contributes to Vocalo.org, the online and new media outlet for Chicago Public Radio, was turned back from the Canadian border late Saturday night.
[Macias] was a lead organizer for No Games Chicago, the all-volunteer citizens group that opposed the Chicago bid for the 2016 Olympics. Martin was part of the No Games delegations that went to the International Olympic Committee's international headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland and then to Copenhagen, Denmark to deliver materials documenting the reasons why Chicago should not have been awarded the games. Martin was an invited guest a conference critical of the 2010 Vancouver games and the Olympic industry.

most of us have been to stressful Bay area protests where there were a few minutes that weren't in control.
Envisioning the Olympic security is another matter- it gives me stress thinking about it. Have you guys seen the movie 'Munich'? Basically, there will probably be advanced secret agents and police forces from dozens of countries, focused on stopping assassins and international incidents from breaking out. They might be more apt to preemptively lash out than during WTO summits, where a larger group of local activists shows up. Meanwhile, the protesters will have some bedsheet signs and practice jaywalking in the streets. Very mismatched
