SF Bay Guardian Missing In Action-No Guardian Of Community Access
The San Francisco Bay Guardian which touts itself as a protector of public resources and represents community interests has failed to cover the privatization of the two San Francisco Community Access Channels
Bruce Brugman and the San Francisco Bay Guardian which proclaims that it represents the community and the defense of public spaces has been conspicuously silent about the transfer and privatization of the San Francisco community access channels. Even the SF Weekly did an article on the threat to the station but for some strange reason apparently this does not concern the "community" guardian.
In the transfer by Mayor Newsom and the Department of Technology, the station on 1720 Market st which the city spent over $1 million building has been shut down and the corporate board of the Bay Area Video Coalition and it's Executive Director Ken Ikeda will be spending millions of city funds to rebuild the station at the offices of BAVC where community producers will have to pay higher charges to use the equipment and spaces. This privatization scam of public funds is another example of the role of the Mayor and his agencies to shut down community spaces. Maybe the SF Bay Guardian is not interested in this rip-off of an important community broadcast vehicle.

Privitazation? Just a new operator. If you're so upset about it moving, why don't you help them pay the $16,000 per month rent? Moving it to Mariposa is just about economics in a downturned economy. Get A Life? Time to move on....
FYI: Rent at the still-occupied public access television facility (1720 Market Street) is being paid for by SF Taxpayers, at least through 4/30/10.
Money from The City exists for rent on a new, extended lease at the same address only if BAVC and its executives were truly committed to community access television.
That doesn't seem to be the case, 6 months into their operating agreement with The City.
BAVC, the new operator of SF public access TV and a crony of Mayor Newsom, is living off the "Fat of the Land", receiving over
$470K annually from Taxpayers to operate both channels (29/76).
Yet, they seem to have major problems getting studio production and editing suites up and running at their Mariposa location.
Maybe that money is being fed into BAVC's other operations. Misappropriation of Public Funds? "The Dirt Always Comes Out
in the Wash".
Could it be that's why the SF Board of Supervisors won't give them any more grant $$$ (See SF BOS Rules Committee minutes,
Item no. 15, dated 1/7/10)?
Next time, those Indybay posters who are apologists for BAVC need to do their homework before they stick their feet in their collective mouths.
As for the SF Bay Guardian, don't expect coverage of this boondoggle. The publisher is a crony of Newsom, too.
