¨The virtual currency of ALBA, the SUCRE, will cost $1.25 USD¨

Caracas, January 13 (EFE). The value of the Unitary System for the Regional Compensation of Payments (SUCRE, by its Spanish initials), a virtual trade currency created last october by ALBA, will be $1.25 USD, the Venezuelan Minister of Finance, Alí Rodríguez, announced today.

The mechanism of compensation will be used for the first time ¨towards the end of this week with the exportation of Venezuelan rice to Cuba,¨ added Rodríguez, according to the state-owned Bolivarian News Agency (ABN).

¨What we are looking for in the SUCRE is the creation of a mechanism which will permit us to create a new financial architecture, which [in turn] will permit us to break with our dependence on the dollar in the operation of commercial exchanges between the nations which form the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas, (ALBA),¨ the minister added.

ALBA is made up of Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbados, as well as San Vicente and Granada.

The appointed head of the Ecuadorean government´s Commission for the Creation of the New Regional Financial Architecture, Pedro Páez, said last October that ¨the SUCRE is going to be able to be emitted, not as a physical currency, but rather as a credit.¨

¨It is an element which, in the long term, could proceed towards the possibility of giving credits, which is particularly revolutionary and transformative in terms of regional financial and monetary structures,¨ Páez said at the time, during an interview with EFE in Quito.
