MLK National Day of Service at the Homeless Garden Project 2010

City: SANTA CRUZ
Location: NATURAL BRIDGES FARM, ON SHAFFER AND DELAWARE
Time: 10AM-2PM
Date: JANUARY 18, 2010

The Homeless Garden Project (HGP) in collaboration with the Zero Waste Network will hold a volunteer work day in honor of Martin Luther King's Birthday on the National Day of Service, Monday, January 18th, from 10am-2pm. The volunteer workday will be held at the Homeless Garden Project’s farm, Natural Bridges Farm, on the West Side of Santa Cruz. The goal for the day is not only to re-vamp our composting system and to improve the soil fertility at the farm, but also to train individuals and volunteers within the community to compost effectively!

Composting is one of the most important steps in organic farming. Providing plants with soil that is rich in nutrients helps to increase plant resistance and also helps to fend off plant diseases.

Last year's MLK's Day of Service drew 130 people to the HGP and created tons of outstanding organic compost for the HGP farm. Paul Glowaski, the Garden Director at the HGP, said "Last year's MLK Day was an overwhelming success. We created a foundation for soil fertility and scores of people learned how to compost. This year will be even better."

Please join the Homeless Garden Project as we rebuild our compost system! There is no experience necessary to participate and experienced composters are welcome! Snacks will also be provided.

The Homeless Garden Project at Natural Bridges Farm is located on Shaffer Road, (cross street is Delaware Ave) in Santa Cruz, 95060. For more information contact Curry Knox at the HGP at 426-3609 or visit our website at http://www.homelessgardenproject.org.
