The Wheeler Occupation and the Battle to Save Higher Education: A Report from the Inside
Presentor: Kyla Collins
On November 20th, 2009, a group of 43 students and activists locked themselves inside wheeler hall on UC Berkeley campus during a UC system-wide strike protesting the many injustices they saw stemming from a large rhetoric of "budget crisis" from UC regents and administrators. The occupiers held off police for over 12 hours, while a large group of protesters raged outside, supporting those inside the building. The occupation ended when the police broke into the floor where the occupiers had retreated, and arrested them for trespassing. In the weeks following the occupation, there has been a great amount of support shown for the new movement that is trying to save public education that has arisen at campuses across California.
At this forum, one of the people present in the building as it was being occupied will give a presentation on what happened on November 20th, and what other actions have happened since, and what the future holds for the UC system.
