Speak-out On The Retaliatory Layoffs at the KPFA Flashpoints Show

by Labor Video Project
Flashpoints, the community radio show on KPFA and many other stations has faced a massive cutback of staff and continuing harassment by the management and their supporters at the station. The management has admitted that they ignored the senority rights in layoffs and illegally cut hours of long time employees

Dozens of Flashpoint supporters attended a rally to protest the retaliatory cutbacks against the KPFA Flashpoints show. Amelia Gonzalez the assistant manager (Manager Lemlem Rijio vacated the building to avoid answering questions) told Nora Barrow-Friedman's mother that the station had violated the union contract and layed off staff disregarding the senority list. She said they were in discussion with CWA 9415 on how they could have layoffs without regard to the station wide senority list.
The layoffs according to Flashpoints staff took place without notice and threaten the viability of the program. Their technical engineer was removed an hour before the show and although Nora Barrows-Friedman has much more senority than other members of the staff her hours have been cut in half. Additionally the pro-management KPFA "union stewards" attacked her at a union meeting.
Organizing is being done to protest these attacks and to call on the station to stop union busting and retaliatory attacks on programs.
