SUNRISE CEREMONY - 40th Anniversary of the American Indian Movement and a Vision to come
For the 40th time the Sunrise Ceremony was held on November 26, 2009 - this Un-Thanksgiving Day by those who pride themselves as the First People on Alcatraz Island. Alcatraz Island comes under the patrimonial jurisdiction of the Muwekma Ohlone. Regional tribes have always held the island as something special at different times in history. 40th years ago - some brave Native Americans, belonging to many tribes - took over the island and woke up the conscience of the United States of America. Many changes for the better have visited many Native American Tribes.
I was there up early in the morning to catch the first ferry boat with the dancers to Alcatraz Island. Some say as many as two thousand made it to the Island to celebrate the Sunrise Ceremony.
I stood close the inner circle as I always do after paying my respects to Fred, Wounded Knee, and other leaders too many to mention - leaders of the First People who I associate with on the many Shellmound walks and events throughout the year.
The Sunrise Ceremony has evolved and this year many of the local tribes such as the Pomo and the Aztec who hail from Mexico and beyond - danced the ceremonial dances.
The smoke of sage and the tobacco smoke - take you to a special place and wipe the sins and that which is not worthy - making the site holy and awe inspiring.
I was close to the inner circle and witnessed it all. Some of the announcements made each year regarding taking photographs are confusing. I for one want to be respectful but at these ceremonies over the years - the message sent to many present - has been confusing.
While it is true that those that are present witness something unique and more eventful - if not memorable, reminding us that if a few could start a powerful movement and we who come after them - can at the least - keep the movement going and take it to a better place.
I met the family of Richard Oakes. I had met them before at the San Francisco State University at the unveiling of the "We Are Still Here " mural - the last permanent mural on the walls of the Cesar Chavez Student Center - West Plaza and one dedicated to the First People. Aho.
The family of Richard Oakes were gracious to talk to me and let me photograph them. I met many former National Park employees. Many know me personally having served with me at the Presidio of San Francisco when I worked for the Department of Interior and the National Park Service. Many other friends from San Francisco and elsewhere - and it was all good.
There were many speakers, each wanting their fifteen minutes of fame. There was a singer from Alaska and he hit the right note with some meaningful lyrics.
The sun came up and that unique light blessed all and within the thousands that stood and witnessed what was happening - there was peace and a unity that calls for more events such as these - to remind us all of a better time and retake what once belonged to the First People but now has been stolen by the strangers and defiled.
Over the years the National Park Service has bent backwards to accommodate this ceremony. I am sure thousands of dollars have been accrued by the Operators that ferry the thousands across this day. There could have been better lighting so that those that pay so much - at least receive the minimum is being facilitated linked to health and safety.
The organizers try hard to be creative and this is good.
I do not know if any tribe has perfected the Sunrise Ceremony in contemporary times. It would have been nice to have one single ceremony - say the Eagle Dance - followed by a prayer before. Then after this spiritual break-fast the other dances and mundane speech making.
I may be wrong but as the years go by - I really do not feel too many spiritual leaders, more shamans - speak with authority, with the ability to change the forces and bring much good. I see more of the vain, the mundane, and the shallow - crying to the Great Spirit for a better - spirituality.
Guest were called and they were no where to be found - I heard the name Ann Mary Sayer and Eric Mar - one arrived late and the other failed to show up.
The Great Spirit knows it all - those in the inner circles, outer circle, and the universe - that have a pure heart. How many of those who took the opportunity do you think spoke and thought with the heart? If the Shamans of old were there - without a word - you would have seen miracles!
I have captured a little in the photographs that I took. I cannot make it to Alcatraz every year - but those years I do - I write about it. I know there are millions out there in the world that would want to witness this SUNRISE CEREMONY - but cannot. This is for you.
If you learn something, experience something, feel something in your heart, some compassion for all living beings on this Earth - you will have made this old man feel good:

Thank you Francisco for writing this and sharing your photos. I have been attending off and on for the past 20 years and some years really hit that spiritual mark and others fall short...that is not the organizers fault...the people who attend bring their intentions, beliefs, energy--the organizers make it come together (they are incredible to do this!) but we as a group make the event be what it is. Did it hit the mark this year? Yes and no...I know so many people are confused and suffering--that's what I felt. My curandera Tereza was there and seeing her face and talking with her helped me remember why I try to make it each year. Kris L. was there and she's a new friend who has been long in the struggle...she reminded me of why I go as much as I can. Hearing Leonard Peltier's daughter speak, while brief, reminded me of his struggle and the political prisoners and that they need our help. Seeing the original people and families from 40 years ago was meaningful too. AND we are all struggling this year. We had great hopes for our president and in the end he is just one man doing the best he can with the crap he got, we have so many needs not just among indigenous people--although those are great--but among all the peoples of the earth. I work on a daily basis to feed, clothe, sooth & support the people of my community, to create art that heals and has meaning and I work on myself--despite all of my efforts the road is difficult! It is painful and it hurts! Do I keep at it? YES.
My hope is that the event serves as a reminder of the ancestors that have gone before us, the elders who worked so hard (and still do) to guide us despite their own struggles, those of us in the middle finding our way, and the youth leading a new charge. I would like there to be more of centralized ceremony, more dancing, music, drumming, and the speeches afterwards, I'd also like a better sound system! and I agree the picture taking message IS confusing! My abuelita said that cameras stole one's soul so I have very few photos of her and never of her ceremonies or prayers--I wish I had more but I understand and respect her beliefs--perhaps there is a way to educate the visitors who do not know why some things can be photographed and others should not...i think educating people who are first timers might help--and at the same time this is a strong reminder of the digital age we are in...I was on facebook while there letting folks know who couldn't make it that I was there--praying for all of us!
Overall the ceremony is an important event...I was happy to see my friends, see the dancing (especially the children!), the honoring of the people who were there in 69-71, and the hope in everyone that together we can create a world for all of us in peace. Do we have more work to do? YES! Have our communities come a long way? YES! and we still have so much to do. Thank you for documenting it...the pictures are beautiful and a reminder of the beauty of the people leading this event. Your article moved me...Thank you!

it seems many are unaware ,not reading about thinfs and realizing.caught up in thoughts of past moments and future moments, not the living BEING that is creative. million years of abuse by humans, all this thanksgiving stuff makes it seem like you are celerating thanksgiving just as much as ''average americans''! ''un - thanksgiving '' has just as much hype as traditional ''thanksgiving''! many of non white race have no family or any racial ''privilege''. evey year thjis ''un thanksgiving'' weight of events. why not have evey day spiritual awakening teaching, not just reproduce kids.summing it up,the moment that just past is DEAD , the ''future'' moment has not happened yet, there is only the now creative BEING, everything is vibration ,just being awake doing ''nothing'' is ''vibration''. you are vibrating NOW! just like in dreams.life is movement , no movement is death. you are vibrating now! now ,enough of this racial superiority crap.''america'' was the model for nazi germany!
