Recession protest in Rome draws 100,000
More than 100,000 people demonstrated in Rome on Saturday to call for greater government action to tackle the recession, according to Italy's main trade union, CGIL.
The leader of the union, Guglielmo Epifani, said Silvio Berlusconi's government was doing nothing to help workers or retired people.
Pierluigi Bersani, the head of the main opposition Democratic Party, said the government had wasted 18 months and real action was needed to boost the economy.
Several hundred thousand people gathered for a similar protest organised by CGIL in April.
