Pirate Cat Radio Gagged by the FCC

by Starbuck
If you’ve been in San Francisco and tuned your radio to 87.9FM, you may
have noticed something: silence. Well, not exactly silence but static--the
sound of Pirate Cat Radio NOT being broadcasted. And for good reason.
On August 31st, Pirate Cat Radio was fined $10,000 by the Federal
Communications Commission for extra-legal broadcasts. The FCC’s order
temporarily halted Pirate Cat Radio’s thirteen-year run as one of the Bay
Area’s most consistent voices of protest against corporate-run media
monopolies and monocultural programming. Pirate Cat Radio has responded to
the FCC and is currently challenging this fine. Read more about the
situation here: http://www.piratecatradio.com/wordpress/?p=14816

But the station is operated by volunteers and essentially run as a
not-for-profit business. So ten large is hard to come by around here. And
that’s why we need your help.

Until the end of the year, Pirate Cat Radio will be in full pledge drive,
telethon, benefit, and fundraising mode, working to raise the cash we need
to continue operations as an internet broadcaster. This way, we can
preserve our original programming and continue to serve our listeners
around the world. We hate to ask, but here are some ways you can help out:

- Thursday Nov 5, 6pm-9pm, Join Pirate Cat Radio DJs for a Benefit Bar
Night at Tonic on Polk @ Union in San Francisco. You enjoy great drink
specials, we get a piece of the action to pass on to the FCC. Learn more
here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=189439463412&ref=mf

- Friday, Nov 20, 8pm join Pirate Cat Radio’s DJ Deevice, Anthony
Mansfield, Mike Bee, Tasho, and Sweater Funk for a dance party benefit at
the Triple Crown. Only $5 before 10pm, $10 after…and all proceeds help
Pirate Cat Radio pay our fines. RSVP here:

- Thursday, December 3 Sub-Mission Art Space will be hosting a Pirate Cat
Radio benefit and auction. More details to come, but keep an eye on
http://www.piratecatradio.com. Bands, DJs, etc., for sure.

- If you’re a shut in or are listening from an undisclosed remote
location, why not make donation to Pirate Cat Radio legal fund? Your
Paypal contribution will help keep the station broadcasting on the
internet and filling your earholes. Send your contributions to
piratecatradio [at] yahoo.com

- Proud of your support of Pirate Cat Radio? Drop a couple days worth of
coffee money on some merch. Logo T-Shirts are just $25 and the 2010 Pirate
Cat Radio DJ Calendar will soon be available for a reasonable price. Visit
http://www.piratecatradio.com/donations.php to learn more.

The Communications Act of 1934 give the FCC the task of studying new uses
for radio, provide for experimental uses of frequencies, and generally
encourage the larger and more effective use of radio in the public
interest. Pirate Cat Radio believes the FCC should be helping
organizations like ours to obtain a license and continue serving our
communities, not to fine us and attempt to destroy a community resource.

Until that day comes, please help us preserve Pirate Cat Radio.
