Taking Back the Land- One Story at a Time- A Talk-Story on Land, Migration and Resistance…celebrating the release of Los Viajes/The Journeys- a literary anthology

POOR Press - the revolutionary, bi-lingual publishing project of POOR Magazine is releasing LOS VIAJES/The Journeys, a bi-lingual anthology of original stories, art, essays and poetry documenting peoples crossing borders and oceans from Central, South America, the Philippines and beyond while also introducing a new lens on immigration informed by the UN Declaration on Indigenous Peoples.
On November 11th, Prensa POBRE will host a talk story circle on Land, Migration and Resistance featuring poverty and academic scholars alike speaking on the UN Declaration on Indigenous Peoples including Jose Cuellar, Tony Gonazalez, Solange Echeverria, Melanie Cervantes, Oscar Penaranda, Tiny aka Lisa Gray-Garcia, silencio muteado, Tony Robles, Nube FC, performances by the Poetas POBRES, the Los Viajes writers and artistas , food and Po’ Products!

For a year and a half POOR Magazine’s community writing project has conducted free bi-lingual, multi-generational, art and writing workshops in shelters, schools and community centers to be included in the powerful Los Viajes book and audio project. This beautiful book of literary, visual art and commentary introduces a new lens on immigration and the migration of peoples that rebukes the concept of “illegal” migration through a lens informed by the UN declaration on Indigenous Peoples which was adopted in General Assembly in 2007.

POOR Press is also releasing five new books from poverty scholars living and struggling in the Bay Area. The 2009 collection of authors include POOR Magazine co-editor, children's book writer, worker scholar, tenant activist and Filipino poet Tony Robles who is releasing his first collection of short stories and poems entitled: Filipino Building Maintenance Company on POOR Press.

POOR Magazine is a non-profit, grassroots, arts organization providing media access, education and advocacy for youth, adults and elders in poverty in the Bay Area. Los Viajes/The Journeys was made possible in part by a grant from the Cultural Equity Fund of the San Francisco Arts Commission.
