China's Hu meets Russia's Putin, painting rosy future

BEIJING, Oct. 14 2009 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday met with visiting Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, hailing fresh development of bilateral relationship and vowing closer collaboration.
"Russia is one of the top agenda on China's diplomacy as we pay much attention to relations with Russia," Hu told Putin in their half an hour meeting in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.
Hu said this year was significant for China-Russia relations as both countries celebrated their 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.
Russia was the first country to establish diplomatic relations with China, days after the People's Republic of China was founded on Oct. 1, 1949.
As an important milestone in deepening relations, both countries established strategic partnership of coordination in 1996.
Hu said this partnership had reaped substantive benefits to both peoples and worked for the world peace, stability and prosperity.

BEIJING — Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday hailed Sino-Russian ties, telling Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that Beijing hopes to engage Moscow in more "big" economic and trade projects.
The two leaders met ahead of Putin's departure following a three-day visit that cemented the burgeoning trade relationship between the two sides with billions of dollars in new deals signed Tuesday.
"Sino-Russian strategic partnership is currently at a new historic starting point and wider prospects are opening up before us," China National Radio quoted Hu as telling Putin in a meeting.

"China is willing to make efforts with the Russian side to further strengthen strategic consultations in international politics, economics, security and other areas and push forward cooperation on big projects in trade, energy and high technology."

The neighbours signed several cooperation agreements, including one committing each country to notifying the other of the launch of ballistic missiles from its territory..

"The Sino-Iran relationship has witnessed rapid development, as the two countries' leaders have had frequent exchanges, and cooperation in trade and energy has widened and deepened," China's Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday in a meeting with visiting Iranian Vice President Reza Rahimi, according to the state-controlled Xinhua news agency. Mr. Rahimi is in Beijing along with the heads of Russia and Central Asian countries who are members of the regional Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

BEIJING — Russia and China are closing in on a mammoth energy deal which could insure that Beijing has the fuel to run its factories and cities and Moscow has a vast new market for its natural gas empire.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Wednesday wrapped up a three-day visit to the Chinese capital, during which Russia signed dozens of commercial pacts worth $3.5 billion and set the framework for a separate, multibillion-dollar agreement to build two natural gas pipelines to China from gas fields in Russia's Far East.

Together, those pipelines would be capable of supplying China with 68 billion cubic meters (2.4 trillion cubic feet) of natural gas annually, representing a whopping 85 percent of the gas China currently consumes.
Once the energy partners agree on a final price and the pipelines are built, China could become Russia's single biggest customer for natural gas.
The agreement highlights the determination of both nations to diversify their economies and seek new customers and vendors. It also reflects a political desire by both to steer a course independent of Western powers and especially the United States.

DENVER — The promise of enough natural gas to last the United States more than 100 years based on discoveries of vast shale formations could be the country's next speculative bubble to burst, a speaker warned Monday at a conference exploring the notion that the world's oil and gas are diminishing rapidly.
Arthur Berman, a Texas-based geological consultant, likened the optimistic projections for production from gas shale fields across the country to banks buying into mortgage securitizations, which spurred the housing market crisis and economic meltdown.

“In the midst of a boom or a bubble, it's hard to sit on the sidelines,” Berman said during the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas conference. “If you're not in one of these plays, then Wall Street says, ‘Well, what's the matter with you guys?'”
That was the psychology leading into the current financial crunch, Berman said. Analyses show that gas shale fields in Texas and elsewhere aren't as profitable and likely don't contain as much retrievable gas as the industry and others portray, he added.
Based on the experience in the Barnett Shale in Texas, Berman said he doesn't expect the yields from the wells to be high enough or last long enough to make the gas shales that profitable, even when current low gas prices rise.

Stephen Green, chairman of Europe’s largest bank HSBC, said the banking industry “owes the real world an apology” for the financial crisis.
In an interview with the BBC, Mr Green who is also a Church of England priest, said: “I think the change in the public perception of the industry is entirely understandable. The banking industry has not covered itself in glory to say the least, and indeed the industry collectively owes the real world an apology for what has happened.
“It also owes the real world a commitment to learn the lessons. Some of them are about governance and ethics and culture within the industry,” added Mr Green.
While the world cannot do without banks, said Mr Green, bankers need to learn the lessons of the financial crisis that has had a devastating affect on the global economy.

POZNAN, Poland (Reuters) - Environmental concerns have caused HSBC to scale back lending to forestry schemes in Malaysia and Indonesia and review links with Canadian (Alberta Tar) oil sands, the British company told Reuters.
HSBC will cut ties with a third of forestry clients in Malaysia and Indonesia, including palm oil, soy and timber, said Francis Sullivan, the bank's adviser on the environment.
The bank was criticized recently by a development group, the Forest Peoples Program, for not disclosing the names of its palm oil banking clients.

Gold prices surged to record high $1,045 an ounce a week ago after a report surfaced that global oil producers are planning to stop using the U.S. dollar for oil trade.

Have you heard? Have you taken even a cursory peek lately into the oversized eco nightmare that is Canada's monstrous, pollutive, disgusting hellholes of rapacious greed and pollution and destruction and sheer capitalistic joy? I bet you have.
They are, you might say, the finest example we currently have of a massive, soulless industry and a major first-world government shoving a giant middle finger in the face of all notions of progress and environmental integrity. They're not the only ones, to be sure -- the coal industry's middle finger is downright callused from flipping everyone off so aggressively -- but for sheer gall, for shamelessly stomping a greasy black boot heel into the face of environmental progress right now, the oilsands simply can't be beat.
They are true wonders, testaments to mankind's remarkable power to continue -- against every hunk of knowledge and common sense -- to rape, maul and utterly devastate everything we supposedly hold dear, all in the name of filthy profit.
Despite whatever good vibes you might've been feeling from all those rumors of a healthy global push toward sustainability and alternative energy, the oilsands remind you: no one really gives a flying f--k. Not when hundreds of billions of dollars are at stake. You cannot help but be perversely impressed...
But that's not the ugliest part. The ugliest part is, the oilsand project is expanding as fast as inhumanly possible. It is already, according to various reports, the largest energy project in the world. Bigger than Saudi Arabia. Bigger than Wal-Mart. Bigger than Jesus...

What, I wonder, would the Vancouver Olympic organizing committee have made of Rosa Parks?
Parks, after all, was a troublemaker. Back in 1955, when she refused to give up her seat to a white person (and Parks, incidentally, was not the first black person in Montgomery, Ala. to do so), she was committing an act of civil disobedience.
She committed that act -- to borrow Vanoc's blandly disturbing term -- in "a bubble zone." It happened to be on a seat at the front of a bus, but it was a bubble zone, nonetheless. The status quo of white racism inhabited that zone, and Parks became renowned by daring to trespass against it.

No display of signs other than those of a "celebratory" or directional nature.
No causing of "any disturbance . . . interfering with the enjoyment of entertainment on city land by other persons."
No "voice amplification equipment" on city property for the duration of the Games.
As for anti-Olympic marches or protests, they will be relegated to "safe assembly areas"...
As for the provincial government, it jumped in last week with the introduction of Bill 13, which would allow authorities in Vancouver, Richmond and Whistler to enter residences and private property with only 24 hours notice to remove or cover up signs during the Olympics period. Violators could be fined $10,000 per day and face imprisonment for up to six months.
Previously, the fine was $2,000 a day. Your home is your castle, unless you happen to displease the IOC.

Chinese activists had been tipped as Nobel contenders on this year of anniversaries, when China marked 60 years of communist rule, 50 years since the Dalai Lama's flight and 20 years since the crushing of the Tiananmen Square democracy uprising.

Something is rotten in Washington's corridors of power. And we aren't talking about lying about sultry sex (and alleged private matters that may or may not be high crimes and misdemeanors), but corruption in the highest circles of our government --- the Departments of Navy, Justice, Defense, Commerce, culminating with bribery and potential treason involving the President and Vice President of the United States.
In their new book, Year of the Rat, national security experts, Edward Timperlake and William C. Triplett, II, outline in graphic detail the selling of U.S. innermost national security secrets to a hostile foreign power, Red China, for illegal and treasonous campaign contributions. Consider this is tainted blood money from the butchers of Tiananmen Square where upwards of 3,000 to 4,000 students were killed in cold blood. The implications of the Clinton-Gore administration welcoming those responsible to Washington, D.C. with 19-gun salutes does not pass unnoticed by the authors. Clinton-Gore would do anything for money to gain power in 1992 and retain power in 1996. Chinese spy John Huang working for Lippo moguls Mochtar and James Riady (also Chinese intelligence agents) played pivotal roles as did Arkansas triad member Charlie Trie and Macau criminal syndicate and prostitute ring leaders Ng Lapseng and Ted Sioeng.
We learn about intriguing (and determined) women, four Asian (all Chinese or of Chinese decent) who also had what could be characterized as "improper relations" with the President (and Vice President), only this time the relations were not sexual but treasonous. One of the women, princeling Lt. Col. Liu Chaoying, a PLA intelligence agent, insisted on and met Bill Clinton, placed money in the Democratic coffers, and thereafter (helped by the President's lobbying) obtained concessions for COSCO in the leasing of the naval base at Long Beach, California.
Most egregiously, while Clinton was preaching draconian gun control for law-abiding American citizens, he was entertaining Chinese gun runners, like Wang Jun of the Red Chinese firm Polytechnologies, with White House coffees and a Democratic National Committee (DNC) fund raising event. Mr. Wang himself (now indicted) manned COSCO's ship the Empress Phoenix which was intercepted by U.S. Customs bringing to the port of Oakland, California 2,000 automatic weapons destined for Los Angeles gangs! Undaunted, in May 1998, Clinton approved the launching of a satellite by Lockheed Martin and a Red Chinese firm in a joint venture with Polytechnologies.
But not all of the characters in this nefarious story are communist Chinese, but American capitalists who placed corporate profits ahead of America's national interest, and so the businesses they headed donated millions of dollars to the DNC to help the Democrats regain Congress in the 1996 and 1998 elections. In return, the Clinton-Gore team signed waivers allowing these companies to transfer our most sensitive satellite (i.e., missile launching) technology to Red China, obliterating the safety margin and technological edge we previously had on our sworn and potential enemies. (China then transferred sensitive U.S. technology to Pakistan, Iran, and North Korea.) As a result, according to American intelligence and the Cox Report, China now has 20 reliable ICBMs targeted at U.S. cities and although not à la par with the U.S., China poses a serious threat to our national security. In fact, during the 1996 Taiwan Strait crisis in which China attempted to intimidate Taiwan and the U.S. sent its 7th Fleet to discourage a communist invasion, a leading Chinese general threatened to nuke Los Angeles adding, with great assurance, that the U.S. would not endanger Los Angeles to defend Taiwan.
We now live in a more dangerous world and the people who have endangered the lives of Americans are still leading this nation! It's beyond human understanding. Given what we now know, President Clinton was lying when in April 1996 he stated: "For the first time since the dawn of the nuclear age, there is not a single solitary nuclear missile pointed at an American child tonight. Not one. Not a single one."
The selling out of our national security secrets to the Red Chinese, as thoroughly documented in this book, is such a dastardly presidential deed as to defy comprehension by ordinary Americans. These acts are so inimical and evil that their disbelief provides the greatest cover to those involved. After all, who wants to believe that bribery and treason in the very pinnacle of our republic might just be true --- particularly in this great era of national prosperity?
In an exclusive interview with newsletter editor David Bossie, Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN), Chairman of the House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight, corroborates: "We had 79 people involved in fund-raising for the Democratic party take the Fifth to avoid incriminating themselves. And there are another 23 witnesses, like James Riady of the Lippo Group and Liu Chaoying of China Aerospace, who live in other countries and we have been unable to interview them. I have asked FBI director Freeh if he had ever been involved in any investigation in which so many witnesses took the Fifth or fled. He said the only time he remembered such a situation was during an investigation of organized crime in New York."
The recent revelations coming out of the Cox Committee (one third of which was censored by the administration as deemed "too sensitive" for public consumption) reveals the frightening extent of Red Chinese espionage and the loss of our most sensitive nuclear secrets. Just recently, in fact, the Red Chinese announced they had built a neutron bomb (which, along with multiple nuclear warhead technology, we now know was part of their stolen espionage loot).
Can we believe the president when he holds his arm to his chest, looks us directly in the eye, and pleads as he did on March 19 of this year: "I can tell you that there is no espionage at the [nuclear weapons] lab since I have been presidentno one has reported to me that they suspect such a thing has occurred?"
Truth is indeed stranger than fiction --- and more frightening too!

While many political journalists largely considered the second term of Bill Clinton's presidency in terms of his romantic interludes, Edward Timperlake and William C. Triplett II follow up on one of the more controversial scandals of the 1996 reelection campaign. The Democratic National Committee was eventually forced to return $2.8 million in illegal contributions, much of it from foreign nationals, and much of it brought to the party by fundraising executive John Huang.
Huang originally represented U.S. interests for the Riady family, a powerful family of Indonesian businessmen with close ties to the Communist Chinese government. James Riady had been a "Friend of Bill" since 1977, and the two authors all but insinuate that the Riadys "scouted" Clinton--whether as an unwitting dupe, a sleeper agent, or merely an exploitable opportunist is never quite clear--and helped underwrite his bid for the White House. In colorful description, they describe how they used undercover techniques to interview numerous sources with first-hand knowledge of illegal links between the Chinese military- industrial establishment and the Clinton-Gore political campaigns. The tragic consequence is the rapid escalation of China's military into a world-class nuclear, space and information-warfare power.
The influence of the President's Chinese friends on American foreign policy is illustrated by an incident involving the down-and-out "Little Rock restauranteur" Charlie Trie during the March, 1996 crisis involving Chinese communist missiles fired toward Taiwan. Following the deployment of U.S. aircraft carriers to the region, Trie showed up in Washington, delivering $460,000 to the President Clinton's Legal Defense Fund -- and a letter, delivered to the White House, regarding the Taiwan crisis. The provocative letter stated, in part [verbatim], "Any negative outcomes of the U.S. decision in the China issue will affect your administration position, especially in the campaign year... If the U.S. recognizes "one China" policy, don't such conduct will cause a conflict for intervening in China's internal affairs?..."
In response, the Clinton National Security Council drafted a letter to Trie, assuring the communist Chinese that the aircraft carriers were simply a "redeploymnet," and "not intended as a threat to the PRC."
Charlie Trie, as the authors found in Asia, is member of a Chinese Tria d crime gang that has close ties to the Chinese Communist Party. Trie's money contact in Macau, who wired more than $1 million to Trie's U.S. account, most of which is believed to have ended up in Clinton Defense Fund and Democratic Party campaign coffers, is Ng Lapseng, a Triad mobster and Chinese communist official. In fact, Ng visited the White House and attended a number of Democratic Party fund-raisers in Washington, sitting next to President Clinton at some events.

Indonesian bankers Mokthar and James Riady have billions of dollars in investments in China. In 1992, with the Clinton campaign broke and reeling from the Jennifer Flowers scandal, the Riady's persuaded the Arkansas-based Worthen Bank, of which their Lippo Bank was a part owner, to issue a $3.5 million letter of credit to the Clinton campaign. In addition, James Riady and his wife donated $450,000 that year, making them the largest private donors to the Clinton-Gore campaign.
Who are the Riady's? The authors cite a CIA report to the U.S. Senate , that states, in part: "James and Mochtar Riady have a long-term relationship with a Chinese intelligence agency. The relationship is based on mutual benefit... the Chinese intelligence agency seeks to locate and develop relationships with information collectors particularly those with close association to the U.S. government." Within months of Clinton's election, a Riady executive and Democratic party fund-raiser, John Huang, had a Top Secret security clearance, with access to the most sensitive CIA information on China. Huang was issued the security clearance five months before working for Ron Brown at the Commerce Department. Incredibly, Huang maintained the clearance after he left the Administration to do full time fund-raising at the Democratic National Committee.
Timperlake and Triplett further describe how other influential American and foreign corporate donors to the Democratic Party, some of whom are directly or indirectly linked to Chinese military and intelligence networks, have influenced Clinton-Gore policies that decimated national security export controls -- despite protests by Pentagon arms-control experts. Citing testimony by highly respected American aeronautical experts, the improvement of Chinese missile performance is shown to be a direct product of negligent Administration oversight of joint U.S.-China high technology programs and satellite launches, that have dramatically improved Chinese nuclear missile accuracy and reliability.
The critical premise of the authors has been validated by the recent rel ease of an explicit Pentagon report to the Congress illustrating how the China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) is developing a range of high technology weapons to destroy American satellites and establish "capability to establish control of space and to deny access and use of military and commercial space systems in times of crises or war." Equally troubling, the Chinese are ready to test fire a new generation of mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles that can hit the entire Western area of the United States. According to the U.S. National Air Intelligence Center the new DF-31 missiles give China a major first-strike capability, "that will be difficult to counterattack at any stage of its operation, through terminal flight phases." The rocket-motor of the DF-31 was first tested in July 1998, while President Clinton was visiting Beijing. Although U.S. intelligence was fully aware of incident, citing it as a "political test," the Clinton Administration failed to raise the issue.
